Forums - Gaming Discussion - Digital Foundry: "Dragon Quest 11 PS4/ PS4 Pro: JPRG Meets Unreal Engine 4"

Youtube Link

Japanese developers are getting some great results from Unreal Engine 4. Dragon Quest 11 follows suit! It's available now in Japan and coming to the West next year. Thankfully John understands Japanese, so he can give you this early preview!

Summary:

  • 900p on base PS4
  • 1728c on Pro
  • Locked 30fps on both
  • Fast loading on both

Game looks lovely...Never played a Dragon Quest game before but will get this after I got my JRPG fix with Ni No Kuni 2 next year.

Definitly this.  I need a remastered version of this game for the PS4.

Nice results from the Pro, but I have to ask: why did SE even develop their own engine? (Agni's Philosophy, IIRC)

Probably Japanese pride. Japan can do their own thing and be better. Can't blame them too much because in the 8- and 16-bit eras of video game consoles Japanese developers were far ahead of the rest of the pack, with only few exceptions. Things didn't change much in the following two generations either.

But as most of the time, bad financials cause companies to rethink their priorities.

Perhaps you are right. Pride certainly has to do with a lot over there.

I am still of the opinion that Japanese developed games are far and away better for the most part. How many people are gonna remember Persona 5 or even possibly DQ11 fondly and play those in 10 years? How many people are gonna do the same for Destiny or another western money-chugger?

excited for the Switch version!

Sticking with financials here, Japanese publishers have had problems to release games at the same frequency as American and European publishers. You can argue that Japanese products are more polished (and it's true), but they have wasted a lot of time and money on building their own engines instead of taking advantage of the tools that have been provided by other companies. And ultimately an engine is merely a tool that has no significant impact on the quality of a game; all that is still up to development philosophies and design processes.

You're right. That is ubequitous. I don't mind western tech being used provided it is somehow better, but it is still a surprise with the history of Japanese devs doing their own thing.

Hm, I'm thinking 720p 30fps for Switch docked if the PS4 version is 900p. Although maybe the bottleneck would be something other than resolution and they can keep 900p with other downgrades.

*Crossing my fingers that the Switch version includes both the 3DS and PS4 versions to make up for the late release.*

I'm going for the Switch version for on the go action. Maybe even the 3DS.
