A certain amount of competition is good for the consumer, a major partnership out of only 3 isn't good.

Didn't Microsoft attempt to buy Nintendo way back in the day?

Anyway, it's not something I can see happening anytime soon. The two companies have very different styles when it comes to games, marketting, and the like. Though as it was mentioned - it could actually be a good partnership though in some repsects, as Microsoft is in good with the major third parties unlike Nintendo and have a much stronger presence in the UK market, where Nintendo doesn't thrive as well. Nintendo, meanwhile, could help MS immensely in Japan where MS is almost non existant. Then there's Nintendo's expertise in handhelds, vs Microsoft's in online gaming. It would also be nice to see Rare reunite with Nintendo, as they were always best when they were working with Nintendo, and have largely become a shell of their former selves ever since partnering with Microsoft.

In the scheme of things though, I'd prefer Nintendo remain as a separate and independent gaming entity than MS. For all their faults/weaknesses, there is still much that they get right when it comes to making games, and I do like some of that artistic integrity and overall quality could be compromised if they decided to partner w/ a major largely non-gaming corporation like Microsoft.

Nintendo is slowly but surely changing and getting with the times though, for the most part, in their own ways which sometimes work, sometimes don't teaming up with MS would not only open up their minds about how the Western market works but also on how to improve their own policies and practices and improve on MS' understanding of the Japanese market and Asian market in general. It wouldn't be easy and would take some time but it would definitely be a win - win.

Im sure if Nintendo ever want advice on selling the least amount of console's, they'll know to call Microsoft.

Well, Xbox One is still outselling the WiiU by a large margin even before Nintendo halted production on WiiU and Xbox One is still getting major third party support without any worries of getting them. In contrast Switch owners have to hope, wait and see and prove themselves by buying mostly inferior, 5 to 20 year old ports to convince third parties in bringing their games to Switch ... So i guess Nintendo could definitely learn a thing or two from Microsoft.

Instead of teaming up, MS could just sell the Xbox brand and it's IP's to Nintendo, of course, such a transaction would probably cost 10's of billions making it extremely unlikely, just as unlikely as any sort of team up between the two companies. But hey, it's a scenario that's fun to think about I suppose.

That would be a dumb move by MS, why would they sell their brand and IP's if they can still make millions of dollars off of them and Nintendo would probably not buy them anyway because they don't like or understand the realistic aesthetics and heavy focus on online that made their games so popular in the first place. MS could team up with Nintendo and keep making their games for the same console with Nintendo.

You know, I'm a huge Nintendo fan, but it definitely wouldn't hurt my feelings to see Halo and Forza on Switch.  As you commented, Nintendo doesn't branch out a lot.  All the new IPs like ARMS feel very "Nintendo".  More variety would be nice.

Not to mention the myriad other problems, like the mismatch on hardware ideals, cultural differences between the companies, etc.

Nintendo fans would definitely love to see games like Halo and Forza on Switch even if most act like they don't care and Xbox owners would definitely like to play Mario or Pokemon with their children once in a while.

You know i think people focus way too much on this cultural difference between Nintendo and MS, of course there are many differences between the two companies which we need to be realistic about but did that make the deal between 2 Japanese companies (NinPlaystation) go well? Not at all, yet today, Nintendo actually agreed to have a Microsoft owned game on multiple Nintendo consoles and even their Xbox Live server running in their port of the game. Sony on the other hand? Didn't, and let's not forget that in the past Nintendo was willing to team up with Phillips (a western tech giant) over Sony, of course that didn't turn out too well but hey.................................................................................

Sony covers a more complimentary base to Nintendo. Their only issue is politics and past squabbles. If Nintendo wanted a Forza or halo they couldve made it better than Microsoft if they put their mind to it. What Nintendo needs to do is make sure metroid is turned into the premier FPS game on the switch.. If Nintendo could turn that franchise into the it shooter on the switch we wouldnt have to bring up Halo.  No offense to Microsoft, but at this rate with their internal development all theyve got in Halo, Gears and Forza. Nintendo and Sony will continue to build up new ips and quite frankly their consoles compliment one another better. What Sony and Nintendo have that Microsoft does not is developmental identity, creativity and talent. They know what they are focusing on, make games for that bracket tirelessly and with a high level of quality and polish. I mean...at this point Spencer has admitted this about Sony and Nintendo with single player games. I mean, lets face it....Xbox Live is great but PSN is no slouch.

Yeah nice comeback...lol

Alrighty then, seeing as you want to push the goalposts out to include windows software, by all means throw in sales of all 3DS and WiiU software too.

Let's take Microsoft's "Installed on 200 Million computers" estimate at face value, and ignore the fact that a large portion of these users were actually free upgraders (even people who had pirated previous versions) and that figure also includes people running the software in trial mode, hence why they tout it as installed on, rather than sold to. But even still let's take it at face value and credit Microsoft with 200 million sales.

Add to that Microsoft's own Lumia phones created after acquiring Nokia, between Q4 2011 and today: 111.3M, add to that the Xbox One sales of roughly 30 million, and since we don't know xbox one's software sales, let's take the estimated average attach rate for ps4 of 7.51 and generously round it up to 8 (way higher than it actually will be, but hey, we're giving Microsoft the best chance of winning here, just to prove a point), this gives us 240 million.

So we have: 200m from Windows 10, 111.3m from their mobile range, and 240m from Xbox software, giving us a grand total of 551.3m

WiiU sales: 13.56M
WiiU software sales: 96.52M
3DS sales:65.30M
3DS software sales: 320.96M

Total combined software+hardware sales for *just* 3DS and WiiU : 496.34 Million.

Then we add in mobile.
Mario run: 78m
Pokemon go: 650m

so even with *just* mario run, Nintendo's total creeps up to 574.34, which is already higher than Microsoft with the conditions you set.
add in Pokemon go and that jumps to a staggering 1.22billion.

So, 551.3m vs 1.22b

MS crushes Nintendo you say?, take a seat fella.

Uhhmm...... Yeah whatever makes you sleep better at night, lol.

There will always be competition no matter what happens in this industry, a major partnership between MS and Nintendo would only strenghen their resources and make them a better competitor against Sony. They would definitely own a big chunk of marketshare and they would pretty much be like Samsung vs Apple.

Look at it this way right now Sony is Youtube, MS and Nintendo are Vimeo and Dailymotion.

Please we all know Nintendo favors Mario Kart over any other racing sim even over their own game F-Zero. They've solidified Mario Kart as the Nintendo racing game, but let's say Nintendo does like games with realistic aesthetics and for mature audiences why then Splatoon and Arms? Nintendo is not interested in graphics, engines and heavy focus on online play especially not in FPS since they've never reffered to Metroid Prime as an FPS and with good reason because it isn't. Metroid Prime never competed with other FPS like Halo, Battlefield or Cod and frankly it couldn't because Metroid games just don't sell.

I think Sony has far more in common with Microsoft then they do with Nintendo. Sony really doesn't care for it's Japanese audience like they did in the PS1 and PS2 days, in contrast conservative Nintendo has always been about Japan first, rest of the world second which is sometimes their downfall. Sony has shown since the beginning of the past generation that all of their focus goes to Western developers. They keep pushing for more realistic and mature looking games like Uncharted, shooters like Killzone and Resistance, realistic looking Japanese games like Demons Souls, The Last Guardian and Resident Evil, 50 dollars of PSN users, while keeping their "too Japanese" looking games in the closet. Why do you think Sony lost Monster Hunter and now quite possibly made a deal with Capcom to keep MH Worlds exclusive? Because they were losing the Japanese support the only reason Japanese third parties keep developing for Sony is because PS4 is leading in sales and they've got the hardware they can develop for, Nintendo on the other hand has the weak hardware as usual.

Nintendo and Microsoft would compliment each other much better.

What are you talking about? Sony doesnt care about the Japanese audience? The seemingly sony doesnt really make any JRPG'sbecause all of the exclusives that come to them by default. They are the defacto third party Japanese console. Nintendo shares Japanese games on the DS. You're right about one thing. Their lack of first party investment in Japanese titles have caused an issue. As far as the Japanese market is concerned the only two platforms that matter are the switch and the PS4. I have all three platforms  and the only odd man out is the Xbox. Microsoft doesnt even make enough titles to be considered a compliment. Nintendo is most definitely a complimentary console to the Playstation, especially if youre a fan of single player experiences. Even Phil Spener said it himself. Sony and Nintendo have the single player experience nailed. Microsoft hasnt even nailed multiplayer. They have nothing nailed this gen at all. Last gen was a totally different story.  Nintendo can only be complimented by a platform with a developmental identity and a mission statement. Microsoft currently has neither.
