Update

Switch vs 3ds will be interesting in a few weeks. Others are just meh compared to the Switch.

Also surprised that the Wii U reach 1 million earlier than both PS4 and Vita.

Well the wii U was the #1 home console in japan untill the switch announcement (ps4 passed it in october). Pretty front loaded though, but just when ps4 seemed to catch up, mario kart realesed. Then smash 4. Then splatoon.

As you the vita... its in the 'no monster hunter shock phase' right now. That and the high price and library of both portables are keeping sales down.P4G is when the vita really picked up I think?

Yeah you cant really deny that another 75 million users you would find a couple of more buyers for this niche game. This game was never going to sell gangbusters on the Switch with it's limited userbase. Unless you're expecting all those who bought the PS4/Vita version of the game also has a Switch and are willing ti buy it once again..

Train wreck is right though. Data shows that install base has usually neglectable influence on sales. Fate/Extella seemingly isn't the type of game you purchase again, in difference to GTA, Crash or Mario Kart. Maybe the value wasn't big enough: GTA, Mario Kart and Crash all offered better value in their rerelease. Maybe competing with Splatoon stole it's thunder. Maybe the Switch-userbase are gamers for different kinds of games. Hard to say really.

So we're essentially agreeing with each other then.

Game was never going to sell a load of copies. It's a niche game of a late port with a niche audience on a system with slim audience compared to the PS4 and Vita. Which is why I think 10k sells is not bad at all. I'm not even saying that this game would sell like the PS4 and Vita if the Switch install base was the same, I mean the audience got the game already.

Ehh, it's actually quite a bit below what I expected from Splatoon after its COMG performance and the general hype level I thought it had in Japan. Oh well, legs are gonna be great anyway. The same for Switch hardware as well. With Nintendo saving Switch stock for Splatoon launch week, and with the Switch's overall super strong performance in Japan so far, I was expecting more Switches to be available.

98,999? Just couldn't quite get the 100k

New 2DS looks like it's stealing New 3DS sales rather than generating new sales too.

Nah, New 3DS sales were always quite low plus, it's now discountinued so those sales are as expected. I think with Dragon Quest XI releasing so soon is what's helping keeping those 3DS sales up quite high.

Remember digital sales arn't counted and splatoon is the type of game you ALWAYS want on the system.

Also ps3 and wii U selling double that of the xbone lol.

Installbase, really?  This game is going to be catered to those who are looking to buy this type game, across multiple platforms.  Those who have the game for the PS4 and vita would be those buying it for the switch and since they have a version that caters to the strength of the switch (on the go with the Vita or the home console with the PS4) it limits those who are willing to buy it again.  There will always be double dippers and those who are first time buyers and it appears for this game its to the tune of like 10k first week.

I think what he want to say is install base doesn't matter for this type of game. It does matter for the game that attract a lot of audience such as Splatoon or Mario Kart. For this type of game the people that want it will look for this game already. It doesn't matter how huge the install base is because most people don't care for it anyway. Think of it like Fire Emblem series pre-Awakening games. It sold more on GBA than the DS, even when the latter has a significatly larger user base.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

Nice! It beat PS4 and PSVita even with supply issues!

Pocky Lover Boy!

You would think with a 99k number for the switch, all switch titles would see a boost, but only MK8D achieved this and its increase was somewhat small (+12%). ARMS (-8%), Zelda (-15%) and 1-2 Switch (almost non existent) didnt gain what-so-ever.

PS4 still with 30k during the summer looks good for DQ11 next week

That was really never my claim either. It was just one of the things that could potentially lower the sales of the game. It was never the key part of my post though so I'm not even sure why it became a discussion topic. Obviously all the other things I wrote was a lot bigger factor than it's install base.

I believe people were being unreasonable with their expectations for the Splatoon 2. This isn't launch anymore, you can't expect a first-week attach rate of 85%. The game is already the most sold on the system, and will, no question, have phenomenal legs.
