Forums - Gaming Discussion - In some ways Microsoft have the right idea

As we know MS has drifted away from traditional exclusives on console in favor of service exclusives, UWP being their service. However, I am still in favor of keeping games exclusive to a console for having a reason to buy it sort of thing. Though I do think MS have one thing right, and that's building up their ecosystem, mainly with backwards compatapility.

While it's true not everyone cares about this feature, it's more of a long term plan. They are growing closer and closer to having all the best 360 games playable on Xbox One, and soon probably the rest of UWP where ever it may end up. And not only can you insert your 360 discs but they are also on Xbox live and purchaseable with their achievements in tact. This is building a massive library to boot and as a result they have a massive head start on Sony.

Imagine if Sony took to bringing PS3/PS2/PS1 BC to PS4 with every game worth their salt on the PSN Store. Not even bringing it to PC, but exclusive to Playstation hardware. It would be their own way of competeing with not only UWP, but Steam, with the added advantage of needing their hardware to access this vast library. This would give PC's a run for their money too since there's a whole lot of games on Playstation consoles over the years that aren't on PC. If I want to play a game like Klonoa on my PS4 I can just download it and do so, or Pandemonium, Xenogears. Some of these could rake up 100's of thousands of sales each. And they could carry over for good since everything Playstation going forward will be X86, same with MS.

What do you think? Should Sony be focusing on an ecosystem instead of resetting their library every generation, falling behind the competiton in choice?

I think: This is nonsense and rather harmful.

Consoles in the traditional sense provide focus, each generation resembles a chapter in videogame history, and each successor starts anew, to strengthen a new generation of games. Alas, game development doesn't get less expensive with new more powerful hardware. It is getting costlier. Also unfortunate, the more games are published on a platform, the more diluted the attention every game gets, since not only is there a finite amount of cash to go around, but also a finite amount of time to spend.

I want progress and new games. Not this retro-gressive trend, getting plastered with old games and games that want to look like old games. If you wanna play those games do it on your own account.

Its the way of the future. Having a strong eco system is what makes Steam successful.
UWP is still in its early days however Steam was no different at launch. In fact at launch Steam sucked. I had such a hard time trying to get Half Life 2 working on it. It wasn't pretty.
I always collect my PC games on Steam however there have been occasions where Win Store earnt my money. Games like Snake Pass for example is play anywhere and i couldnt resist the value there.
Alot of gamers seem to choose to hate UWP or Win10 however through actual experience games like Gears 4, Horizon 3, Ori and Halo Wars 2 all work great and better if your PC is more powerful than a X1.
Like everything that's new, people hate change. Time will tell if it works out. I gave a chance 14 years ago and look where it is now.

My hate on W10 comes from the fact that even though all drivers showed as working fine and compatible I lost webcam, microphone, sometimes auto hard reset and several other minor issues "for free" on upgrading from W8 to W10.

Thats a shame for you, works great for me. I think i had one little issue with a cloud save however got recovered quickly.

Playing Horizon 3 in 4k on PC is amazingly good and its just the tip of the ice berg.

Steam on launch had way more issues than Win10 did yet Steam grew to be my primary gaming place.

Win10 store is only going to improve and get bigger especially since majority of Xbox games including BC wont be on Steam.

Yep, W10 worked well enough for everything else, but for skype and the like I had to use external camera and mic. But I have no issue with the OS in itself. Good that you are having a good time on FH3.
