Basically 'If it isn't a few games, or Nintendo, no one really cares'.

I do have to disagree with him. I like Nintendo, but I feel that more than Nintendo, FF, and Metal Gear are impactful

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Well to be fair, I don't really see Metal Gear continuing unless it's remasters. But this, is entirely wrong.

One thing that really annoys me this genre is the use of the word "niche." I feel like a lot of developers are scared to dabble in genres that were once popular simply because COD or Open world games are now the popular games. But a lot of the time these games most likely have a huge market that's just waiting to be tapped in to. Persona 5, and yes, *The Last Guardian*, sold well, so stop trying to faze out "niche" games and take more risks.

And Nier Automata is near 2.5 million, and it's from an extremely niche franchise.

So show your data and proove your case. He's talking from a business analyst perspective, sales are what counts, so what you got?
He gave context why 2m sales is nothing to brag about. The best I could add is Bloodborne, but still not impressive #s vs "non-Japanese".

Look, if plenty of Japanese games did sell well by global comparison, then we would see more Japanese games with global norm budgets. I don't get the point of this thread, people who like Japanese games are a niche globally, but they are happily served by existing content. What is the point in trying to inflate them into something they are not? How does that serve the players who happily enjoy them now?

Ugh Patcher, you really should keep your opinion to yourself sometimes....

Of course that nowadays western games moves more consoles, but Japanese games are far from irrelevant.RE, Monster Hunter, Nintendo, Square Enix(He forgets that Tomb Raider, Hitman and many games are owned by Square and they are tecnically japanese, even if developed by western stufios), Kingdom Hearts, Nier, Persona 5, Sega, and many more are franchises and companies that sells millions per game of each of their well stabilished franchises.

I know that Patcher is a moron that dresses up as an analist, but it really pains me hear what he says once in a while.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

This guy make it look easy to be a video game analyst. He should get a reward for that.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

Patcher just doesn't want to admit that there is other important 3rd party support then Western AAA third party support

What a loser! Just like his sales predictions.

Anyway a lot of the big Japanese titles are on handhelds not just consoles. So it looks like there is less because he doesn't pay attention to handhelds. However in reality support is split. Western companies put all their games on home consoles. Japan is more split as it between handhelds and home consoles.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

He's wrong. Yes, it's true that individual series don't compare to GTA or CoD, but the whole of "Japanese games" is very meaningful and important to the industry.

And "2 million units is a rounding error" is just idiotic.

Just ask Microsoft if they wouldn't love to have some of Playstation's exclusive "rounding errors".

He "forgets" ...Or is well aware of that fact, and simply uses common sense metric that non-Japanese developed games don't count as Japanese games just because the IP owner is Japanese (same for all Sony owned Western developed games), and the inverse would be true as well (if Western pub owns IP of game developed by Japanese e.g. MS' Japanese forays still are "Japanese games"). Is Jaguar and Land Rover no longer English car makes because an Indian conglomerate owns the brands? No, that's just corporate financial dealings that doesn't change underlying nature of the product. Same here.

He explicitly deals with the best selling of that group (Persona) and objectively compares it's sales to MEDIOCRE western titles. Not same ballpark. He does also touch on Sonic, although that also doesn't really reach even 5m type sales numbers. And these are the best of the bunch.

Somebody brought up handheld games, and that may be valid if one bothered to back it up with numbers... although note that basically falls under "Nintendo" category exception. And speaking from financial perspective, if those games sell for less (let's say half) they should also count half as much (or whatever). If you are about to retire and depend on getting X% return from investments, how much profits being made actually matters to you. That is the customer for professional business analysts.

IMHO this simply falls under "Pachter stating obvious things" category, which is distinct from his  "stating insane things" category.
Again, Japanese games hold value for their fans independent of their lesser sales vs Western games. This doesn't challenge that at all.

Naruto, DBZ, MGS, FF, gran turismo, Mario, resident evil, all sell millions of copies. Even a game like neir has sold 500,000 copies on steam alone. Tekken 7 has already sold over 500,000 copies as well and debuted at #1 for June npd.

So I'm not really sure what he's talking about.

he said "a few games, or nintendo" meaning that there are exeptions like FF. but otherwise...its kinda true. even the smash hit persona 5 sold "mediocre" numbers VS AAA western titles. and I love persona.
