Forums - Microsoft Discussion - If XBX fails, what next?

Say XBX is a flash in a pan. It sells good its first holiday, but by spring/summer 2018 PS4 overall is still #1, Switch remains very competitive globally, and Xbox One sales overall (S +X) are still flat /down YoY throughout 2018. XBX in holiday 2018 sales growth remains flat.

Obviously MS would have already failed to fix their weak sales with new, more powerful hardware. Unless there's a lot deliberately held back from E3 this year, there doesn't seem to be a big 1st party push for 2018 and beyond.

What do you suppose Microsoft would do with this situation?

More PC support?

Bigger pricecuts?

Xbox Surface?

Major acquisitions?

Fire Phil?

XBX2?

With Xbox overall, you obviously have a user base still hanging on out there, but what do you do about your rivals outpacing you?

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Maybe... a partnership with Nintendo for the Switch successor?.............

That would be freaking hilarious xD

But will never happen.

In my opinion, looking at their ACTIONS (not their words, their ACTIONS), all indicators are that Microsoft has one foot out the door.  If the Xbox One X fails to achieve their goals, I would not be at all shocked if they step out of the console industry.  The Xbox brand will remain probably become a gaming PC line or a platform like Steam.  But Xbox consoles would be dead.

Xbox 2...

Most likely they'll wait a few years and release a true next-gen Xbox to compete against PS5. A fresh start without the negativity that has plagued them all of this gen might be exactly what they need. Hopefully they use the next few years wisely by investing in building up their rather weak first party.

I'm wondering if they should find another name to set it apart from the toxicity of the Xbox brand?

And with One X they pretty much gone around the whole circle.

I don't really understand microsofts strategy with Xbox so who knows.

Xbox is still a brand with value in North America. The people where I work only talk about "playing Xbox". It's not like it's irredeemable.

When I remarked on my workplace being Xbox-land, my co-worker said, "Playstation is mostly just sports games." I'm not making that up. When I said something about Playstation having a lot of Japanese games, he just looked at me in confusion. He was probably thinking, "how could I play a game in Japanese, you idiot."

Anyway, that aside, Xbox is another gateway to Microsoft's ecosystem and they're not going to drop it anytime soon.

Yeah, basically this.Their actions lately(read last 2 years) has been of branching out, and even giving up of the console business and being more of a platform holder.I expect them to try to double down on the Windows Store as a Steam substitute and their first party offerings become third party, with releases on whatever is left of Xbox and Steam and Windows Store(Yes, Im expecting games such as Halo and Gears to go to Steam)

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
