Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Skyrim on Switch in Handheld Mode

Looks like it's running solid. Very PS3/X360 looking. Maybe it accesses a higher texture pool when docked.

Now if only Bethesda releases Fallout 3...

looks good. I've been saying for a while that Skyrim is one of the big Switch games for the Fall, even though for some reason people haven't been bringing it up much. I've played it a bit on the PC a while ago (maybe 20 hours?) and def would love to try it on handheld.

I agree with some sentiments though; a Fallout 3 / New Vegas Bundle pack or something would be absolutely amazing handheld. One can dream I guess :/ probably very little chance of that happening based alone on how slowly Bethesda seems to have been working on the SKyrim port

Docked mode typically boosts rendering resolution, and sometimes offers a better framerate, but doesn't usually change the quality of in game assets.

Love skyrim and when I get a Switch I'm sure I'll be picking up. Hopefully in the bargain bin by then. As a first impression this looks really good but will wait to see the final reviews on retail hardware to see how the whole package works. I'm not really bothered about docked performance so much in this instance as can play it on pc to a higher standard so really its more about portable performance for me. Currently I have a lynx vision and while I get very good battery runtime the graphics have to be set very low to get a decent frame rate. 800x600 and the lowest possible detail. I prefer to play Fallout 3 on the go on that device because you get the full fat 720p display and still get a decent frame rate.

One thing I'd like to see in future Nintendo Switch games is a low performance mode where they dial back the gpu speed to get greater battery life. Skyrim for me is one of those games where time just seems to disappear as you get engrossed in it. I've had 4 hour sessions thinking it was only 2 hours. Maybe it will be a good thing if I'm forced to stop after 2 hours.

As for graphics quality, when you come out of the castle and look down on the buildings from the top of the steps the detail seems very low which I think was also the case on 360 and PS3. Also I strongly suspect the game will have varying resolution depending on load because the nature of Skyrim means frame rates will vary normally and I think resolution dropping is the best cure especially in portable mode where you may not even notice it in the heat of battle against a Dragon. Assuming these demonstrations were using development Switch's which run at 2ghz there may be some adjustments to 1ghz for retail switchs. So its important to wait for the reviews on retail hardware. I'm not saying performance will change but it could. I don't think there is any issue with the Switch running Skyrim graphically but cpu assets are a little low so wonder if anything has been scaled back to take the load of the cpu. I can see absolutely no such compromises in the video footage so far.

Is it just me, or is that video not showing up for other people? All I see is a blank white gap.

While it's cool to have a portable Skyrim, as a Nintendo fan I haven't found a reason to even consider getting a switch yet. I never buy handhelds so I guess the portability thing is lost on me. Maybe when Metroid Prime 4 arrives.

say what?

aside from the whole online chat thing, Switch is a love letter to its fans with what it is, and the games that are out and coming out.  I can't come up with a reason not to buy one.

As a secondary option? YES

As a primary option? Hell no, you lose more than you gain with switch as a primary/only option.

That's purely subjective.

The Switch has been my main system since launch and haven't bought any PS4 or XB games in months. And with the release schedule for this year, it will probably stay like this for the rest of it. People are underestimating the appeal of the portbale aspect. I would gladly double dip on Skyrim because of that, even if I already play on my PC.

Is my case subjective too ? Yes.

Are there other Switch owners like me ? Probably yes.

Looking good. Can't wait to tear back into this game after a few years off. Passed on the "Special Edition" for portable.
