They have the same basis but a completely different attitude and intent. Like an imam in a soup kitchen and an ISIS fighter.

Patriotism and nationalism are both based on pride but they take a completely opposite approach. Which takes me back to my original comment. Patriotism has never hurt anyone, nationalism has.

Patriotism and nationalism are literally synonyms ...

Just what exactly is the difference between liking or being devoted to one's nation ?

You're almost there.

How is it going in the US with creationism vs evolution in schools? And didn't Trump call for teaching patriotism in schools as well? I already find it weird schools here in Canada start with the national anthem each morning. Then again, I never got brainwashed like that in the Netherlands and I moved out of there when I had the chance :)

Will we see a time when there's a worldwide school curriculum? Teaching kids about how the world works, contributed too by all countries. Schools can still teach local culture and history ofcourse.

"jihad as patriotic in spirit."

But that's not the true meaning of Jihad, like, at all.

So it's just another co-opting of a word for political control. Shouldn't really be surprised.

Turkey is devolving fast. I wonder if this would be happening if the EU had been more welcoming of Turkey as a member of the back before Erdogan started dismantling the secular bulwarks upon which modern Turkey was founded.

What are you talking about? This is exactly the WRONG thing to do when this is happening. Plus, letting Turkey into the EU means that 80 million turks can now roam around EU nations with no border controls. Not only would it be a security risk, but there would be millions of turks flooding the labour market in other nations as well. It would be an absolute disaster.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

There is a rise of the far-right at the moment.

This is just another example of that with Erdogan favoring conservative religion in the school curriculum.

Trump is probably butt buddies with Erdogan, just like he is with other heartless idiots like Putin and Duterte.

Now I hope you understand why I keep saying World War III is iminent; Tyranical friendships are on the rise.

Some days I just blow up.

The True Meaning Of Jihad. Sounds like a South Park episode.

Turkey has shown to the world that Muslims and Non-Muslims can live together and embrace peace, freedom and democracy.

I got curious enough to look up what it really means. It looks like teaching people the true meaning of Jihad can't hurt to weaken its politically charged meaning. The number one definition in Meriam-Webster is a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty Reading this national geographic article from 2003, that seems incorrect. Yet in the West that is the main or only interpretation nowadays.

But indeed, nothing to do with patriotism.

Jihad literally means "to strive for". A parent working 80 hours a week so their children can live without worry is jihad. An institution creating soup kitchens and feeding the poor is jihad. There are millions of examples of Jihad.

Unfortunately, the only section of it that is in focus by anyone is the "fighting for the defense of your neighbors" example. And by the looks of it, Turkey is going to follow in these steps as well. They're not teaching the true meaning of Jihad, rather, they're teaching and focusing on an extremely minute example of Jihad.
