No. If Uncharted is an Action game, then so is MGS. There's nothing about MGS that makes it more of a shooter than Uncharted.

Even Wikipedia calls MGS an action-adventure game. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid

Uncharted on the otherhand...

"Uncharted is an action-adventure third-person shooter platform video game series"

Actually, they are putting both franchises in both the 'third-person shooter' and 'Action-Adventure' category. I have just not included Uncharted into the FPS genre as the game's action is less orientend on shooting people than MGS.

Have you even played Uncharted? The gun mechanics are literally the only fleshed out combat mechanic in the games, the melee and stealth are just lite with literally no substance. The climbing and platforming supplament the action. Really calling it an action adventure, as in the same ilk as Zelda or Metroid for example, is stretching it. It's a third person shooter at it's core. MGS on the other hand has a whole host of mechanics built specifically for stealth. To say MGS is a TPS and Uncharted isn't is just stupid.

Why have you included Resident Evil 7 in this comparison?

I know RE7 is FPS. I have included it as the 6 other installments are TPS and I based my analysis on the franchises performance.

If I remove MGS "because its an action-adventure", Mass Effect "because it's a RPG", Resident Evil "because the last entry was actually a FPS" it leaves only Gears of War and I'm sure some people could find a reason not to consider it a TPS.

My point here was just trying to do the same analysis as I did for FPS as people asked me to and I told them I would do it.

I know my list of main franchises is not perfect (and so far no one suggested a better one), I just need to select what I consider the major ones to determine how well the genre is doing as a whole.

After reading this thread some more it's clear this man just didn't want to inculde Uncharted for whatever reason. He knows the fuckery that is this thread, he's well aware of it. He's basking in it.

Well, try saying that to others arguing they are both action-adventure games, not TPS.

As I said, Uncharted has platform, shooting, exploring, puzzle solving elements, it's clearly an Action-Adventure game, not a TPS. I don't recall MGS having the same diversity of gaming elements.

Wow guys ok just remove MGS out of the analysis if you want.

What does it tell on the trending of sales for the TPS genre? Would it change the conclusion?

Also I could do a graph comparison for all the major stealth franchises. This graph would include Metal Gear Solid along with.... oh wait there is no other major franchise for this genre.

Fair enough.

Honestly, I don't think genres now are as easily defined as they were in previous generations. Gameplay has evolved beyond keeping games in specific genres now, where we have countless games that bridge the gap between multiple gameplay types. Mass Effect for example could fit into both RPG and TPS categories, just like (as you've pointed out this thread) Uncharted could be defined as both Action Adventure and TPS.

I don't think anyone really wants you to remove the likes of Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect, because key parts of those games are indeed based around TPS elements, people just want you to add Uncharted to the list because it's far more of a TPS than both MGS or ME. It makes no sense to include games based around that gameplay while ignoring one of the games that helped popularise that gameplay with the mass market.

Off the top of my head:

Metal Gear
Splinter Cell
Hitman
Thief
Sly Cooper
Syphon Filter (although that's really only half of Siphon Filter games)

You could even argue that Dishonored and Assassin's Creed are series that heavily feature stealth. By hey, why actually do a simple google search when you can proudly be so openly ignorant.

Look it's nobody's fault but your own that you made shit choices when it comes to what qualifies as "third person shooters" and what games to include in your list.

You're arguing that Uncharted is not a third person shooter, but Metal Gear Solid is because you can jump, climb and solve puzzles in Uncharted? Does puzzle solving in God Of War suddenly not make it a beat em up? Uncharted's primary draw, it's fundamental gameplay loop is third person shooting action. The fact that you would include MGS because it contains shooting people in third person despite the myriad of other mechanics the game literally encourages you to use instead, and not Uncharted because you can jump and solve puzzles is just retarded.

If you want to keep your decline narrative going, you actually bring up an interesting point. All you had to say is 'not including Uncharted, The Last Of Us, GTA'. But trying to convince me that MGS is a TPS and Uncharted isn't is a lost cause.

I went on wikipedia and half of your list is listed under action-adventure, but hey I guess they are as ignorant as me...

The other half is either non major at all (seriously Sly Cooper did not even manage to sell 5M for the whole franchise), not even a franchise (only one Thief game on console) or a died franchise (Syphon Filter).

Thanks for your respectful reply Carl, I just added the Uncharted series and edited my graph in order to please some people (while I'm sure some others will find a way to complain it should not be there...).
