4k is fine for the next 20 years. We can upgrade to 8k between 2030 and 2040.

I have a 70 inch 4K display and I have a hard time telling the difference between 4K and 1080p on 70 inches... 8k is just completely unnecessary, the human eye can only see so much...

is there really a need to upgrade from 4k? which is really crisp and clear. i think resources would be much better off put into other things than 8k.

I agree.

Resolution has been hot lately, because it is easy to market, as it is easy to understand.  That's fine.  Resolution needs to be the cool thing once in a while, so that the tech moves forward in that area.  But, as we all get to 4k over the next couple of years, my hope is that the focus will switch to frame rate.  It is also fairly easy to understand.  In my opinion, it has a much larger effect on the gaming experience than resoltion.  It fundamentally changes the feel of a game.

Things like textures, physics, and number of assets on screen are all important. But, they're harder to make the consumer understand, so they're harder to sell.  I think these kinds of advancements will always be mostly behind the scenes.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

Higher resolutions are always better when hardware to support it exists. Right now we don't even have the fucking plugs to support 4k144Hz let alone GPUs to handle that load.

I will go 8k as soon as the technology is there, but for now I'm still waiting for the technology to be there for 4k.

A statement like this is clearly true but in itself not meaningful. Clearly, more money is always better, so you probably don't mind 80-hours-per-week-jobs.

1080p is my max. My TV is 1080p, my base ps4 is 1080p, my Switch is 1080p, and my PC can run either 1080p at max settings or 4k with low/medium settings. No reason for me to upgrade yet.

I no longer care about resolution at all. Enough is enough and it will never end until we get to the point of matching the human eye. I'll upgrade as I see fit and not really pay attention to what these companies would like me to do.

Matching the human eye is difficult, because the human eye has no clear-cut resolution. We might already have the pixels to match the cone-cells (color-seeing). Humans have about 5-7 million cone-cells. 1080p are around 2M pixels, 4K are around 8M pixels. But for one the eyes flick around while we look at stuff. Also the density of cells differs, in the central area the density of photoreceptor-cells is much higher than at the borders, so human eyes have no consistent resolution.

If you read the rest of my post you would've also gotten the context of the first sentence. This is about hardware that does not yet exist. I don't see how infinite money would help me here.

The meaning here is that it is currently not possible to have a perfect 4k, let alone 8k experience because the technology does not exist.

No, you didn't understood my post. I say looking at one thing alone - like resolution - isn't meaningful. There are tradeoffs between different stuff. Money aside, the size of your room limits also your TV. And as some in the thread said: quality of the panel is also important. Talking about the 80-hours-job is a comparison, if money was your only guardstick you would work 80 hours or more.

8K only worth for virtual reality headsets. For TV and monitors is a complete waste. 4k is enough.
