Playstation and Nintendo have way too many system sellers for me to name just one. Xbox is a lot easier as they only have 2-3 real exclusive franchises. So halo sold me on the original Xbox.

PS2: GT3, MGS2, DMC, FFX, GTA3, Ico, Onimusha.
GameCube: Luigi's Mansion, Wave race blue storm, Super Smash Bros Melee.
Dreamcast: Soul calibur, Sonic Adventure, Power stone, NLF 2K, Crazy Taxi.
PS3: MGS4, FFXIII, Naruto: UNS1, Gran turismo 5, Resistance Fall of man.
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy, Smash bros brawl, Wii sports.

Well, indeed, this only holds true for secondary systems: I always get the Playstation systems by default, and continue from there. Some system sellers though:

Gamecube: Baten Kaitos, TLoZ: TWW, Tales of Symphonia, Melee, GBA player accessory
Wii: Xenoblade, The Last Story
DS: Final Fantasy IV, NSMB, Dragon Quest remakes

I have to agree. But, it doesn't necessarily come into play there either.

I like video games, so I buy gaming hardware. It's usually not for any specific game. It's because I want to play lots of stuff, or sometimes just because I want to own various systems, regardless of the games on them.

Consoles are investments so I'm buying them with the anticipation of multiple games. There are short term system sellers that eventually trigger my purchase but usually there are long term sellers that I actually want a lot more and are the real reason to buy.

PS3

Its no secret thatXbox right now is quite lackluster in the exclusives department, but boy did Forza horizon 3 sold me on Xbox one S. Easily the racing game this generation IMO.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Super Mario Land 2 sold me on the Game Boy (knowing about the existence of a Mario-shaped world really amazed me as a kid), and Yoshi's Story (among others, but was the biggest push) on the N64. I can't remember buying any other console for a specific game.
