Not sure about the growth in Australia it's pretty limited with 24 million people , but I do remember that Sony AUS boss Michael Ephraim proclaiming that Australia was by per capita the biggest market by a fair margin for the PS1 in both hardware and software , not sure today .

I found this data about AUS sales from 2009.

"Let's get straight to the point.

To recap, here's how the hardware performed in 2009:

DS - 760,000 Wii - 730,000 360 - 300,000* PS3 - 272,000 PS2 - 120,000 PSP - 100,000

And here's the total life-to-date sales figures:

DS - 2,500,000 PS2 - 2,500,000 Wii - 1,700,000 360 - 800,000* PS3 - 646,000 PSP - 604,000

Looks like the DS is well on track to succeed the PS2 as the best-selling piece of games hardware in Australian history. Bravo!

*Microsoft did not reveal official GfK sales data. The Xbox 360 figures are an estimate based on an internal Microsoft figure of 850,000 consoles in Australian homes at the end of 2009, compared to around 500,000 at the end of 2008."

After Saturn, Japan's sales played a smaller role in the global market for home consoles. Handhelds consoles have always done well there as well.

So, Sega is to Japan like Atari is to the US - it killed the console market?

what?  Didn't you hear Atari is coming back into the home console market?

Sony is very even with Europe and US compared to others. Also had no idea 3DS sold more in Japan than NA

China is not the only one who has the potential. India and the Southeast Asia region also has a chance to be the next large market thanks to their immense population. So far, only PlayStation has its foot here though. Nintendo are having their own little market here thanks to their success in portables while Xbox is only for a gaming enthusiast.

Mobile, Tablet and PC gaming seem to rule those markets though.

The market is huge, open to western games and expanding rapidly, but not necessarily for console gaming.

That's why I said it has a chance, albeit a quite small one. It's up to Sony/Nintendo/MS to execute it properly.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

Consoles are too much of a premium for China. PC games do well because people play PC games in cyber cafes, they get phones on plans, etc.

The PS3 was the best selling system in Australia in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The numbers were at 1.5M at the end of 2011. In 2013, the Wii wasn't even in the top 10 SKUs.

Nintendo has a chance.

It depends on if pokemon blows up.

They can even sell switches at 250 there cause less shiping costs.

I don't think it's a surprise that the Saturn was more popular in Japan, I think that's pretty well known. It was selling very well from 1994-1996, until the PS1 took much of its steam from it.

Considering that the Saturn was Sega's best-selling console in Japan despite being an utter failure, it should come as a surprise to everyone who wasn't already aware of its regional sales distribution.

It would not come as a surprise to anyone aware of the games available on it, however: its extreme Japanese skew was why I even got one, well before I was aware of the sales numbers.

OT: I find it funny how consistently the XBO is selling compared to the X360, ratio-wise. Looking at just weeklies, it's not obvious at all. It is also funny how much of a lacklustre effort NoA frequently put in given how much better Nintendo home consoles are doing in their region.
