I don't watch Who, but is this like if the next James bond was female?

I see a lot of people say gender won't change anything, but I don't think that's true.

I agree with several points here, but it was mainly that Moffat was just not as good as Russell Davies, simply because Davies planned the key elements of his 4 seasons from the beginning. It was clear Moffat was doing this as early as his secind season when you step as realise that the logic behind the Silence had completely changed and didn't fit with the continuity. The same happened with the 2 Trenzalore epiosdes.

He did have some really good standalone episodes, Heaven Sent to me was amazing and The Day of the Doctor was no disappointment, but some moments were really overplayed and became cheesey - my picks here being Amy and Rory's death (probably going to feel some heat for that) and Clara whispering into the crack in the universe in the time of the doctor.

i wont deny that he did write some great episodes, but i think his best work is the episodes he wrote for the 9th and 10th doctor. he was great for solo episodes but his convoluted multi-episode arks that he attempted felt silly, like he just it up as it went along.

Totally agree. Moffat was a brilliant writer of stand-alone episodes during the Davies era. So much so, in fact, that I was positively overjoyed when he became show runner. I didn't realize then that Moffat's strengths as a single-story writer would translate so poorly to the demands of a larger, longer arc. Moffat, for all his ingenious dialogue, has backed himself into a corner again and agan throughout his tenure. He writes himself into a jam, then writes himself out of it, often changing the series' continuity in the process. He consistently sacrifices character and canon to tell the story he wants to tell in that moment. It makes for some powerful, mind-bending stuff, but it has long-term negative effects on the series.

I don't know why everybody is making a big deal out of it, however I don't watch Doctor Who at all. From the little bits that I know, I don't see why the Doctor can't be a girl or a minority or something along those lines.

I mean, it can be a bit off-putting when these types of changes happen, with the ghostbusters being the main example of gender swaps gone terribly wrong. For this show though, it honestly feels like the gender or race of the Doctor is the least important thing about it. I will say, I'm pretty annoyed by some guys making this out to be like a crime or some sort of personal attack on men AND some women making this like a defining moment in the lives of women world wide. I guess these are just people with waaay too much time in their hands and not enough actual problems/hardships.

The bartender could make a sex joke out of "shaken not stirred" :P

Anyways the movie "james bond" character isnt true to the "real" one from the books, the way the author invisioned.

It would just be them straying further from the orginal concept.

Part of the james bond movie character is him, seemingly always getting into bed with tons of smokeing hot "bad girls". Its basically comical, and abit of fan service.

That part wouldnt work, with a female "jane bonde".... so either they would have her bed tons of guys.... and maybe off put their fan base (try to appeal to women? get them to watch more action movies), or they would have to make up for it with haveing "jane bond" do alot of semi naughty scenes.

I'll always be a sucker for the 10th Doctor so every successive one regardless of who they are has an uphill battle with me. I think everyone has a favorite, what makes the show what it is.

Forgot he also did episodes for David Tennant, reminded me that he wrote Blink which is one of my favourite episodes, so the Weeping Aangels are definitely one of his best contributions to the series. Agree with your comment about the story-arcs though.

I grew up with Tom Baker's Doctor and haven't watched much else except some Tennant (which I fairly liked)...no idea who Jodie Whittaker is, but I guess it'll boil down to how good writing and acting is.

I've been interested in getting into this show. Where would be the best place to start?

The very first season, it will only be a couple hours of watching until you catch up.

As for the topic on hand: Change is good.

If you're interested enough to watch 10 seasons, go with the first one. If not, you can start in the fifth season without missing a lot.
