It's very simple reason why how it can be explained...when Clara jumped into the doctors time line ..what happened to her? Multiplied into many Clara's in the Doctors very own time line...she merged with the very Doctors time line ...what did the doctor do..jumped in after her..

By doing such it multiplied the Doctor throughout his very own timeline...and since each duplicated Doctor also Regenerates....infinite numbers of the Doctor..

And since the very core ability of all Time Lords is the ability to regenerate...there is bound to be variable Regenerations of each time duplicated Time Lord..

Take a read on those books ian marsh & Peter were involved in writing novels for the new adventures of Doctor who during the 90's and those were about the 7th incarnation of the Doctor..

Remember the 12 th talked about the corsair's ability to regenerate into the opposite sex..bit in hell bent...the general regeneration into female..

Regeneration is random most of the time unless your like the master which has a pretty good control over his regeneration process.

I feel like the lore sometimes contradicts itself. Aren't regenerations supposed to be completely random? The 9th doctor even says before he regenerates that they never know what they're gonna end up with. But then there are also scenes such as where Peter Capaldi remembers his face from a previous episode with the 10th doctor and remembers why he "chose it", which would imply that they do have at least some sort of control over who they become?

So while it has always been said that the doctor can regenerate into anything it makes me wonder if they're going to try to give a reason for it that made him become a female this time where as he didn't during all his other regenerations or just go with "well we always said the doctor could become anything" that has been said and shown in the show before like with that one episode from series 9 where that one guy regenerated and come back as a woman.

I think the latter would be better since it doesn't need its own explanation, people who have been watching the show would already know that it was always possible. It doesn't need to be made a big deal that the doctor is all of a sudden a woman now since it has been said in the show that it's possible, just like it wasn't made a big deal that the master became a woman and was Missy, it was just the master being back which was the big surprise.

Yes, the lore isn't completely clear, but it's clear enough that we can know that it was possible for the Doctor to end up as a woman. I do agree that I hope they don't make a too big deal out of it (though I am sure it will be made notice of in the show sometimes - which you would also expect if this were to actually happen. Just like we are used to the doctor being male, so are the characters in the universe, but hopefully both they and us will get over it pretty quickly.)

Actually take a read at these:

This was the official RPG , even written from the novelization of the adventurous of the 7th doctor and Ace...

The Doctor has unlike the master problems controlling his regeneration process, while the master has much better control..like Romana

Or like time lord borusa who also had control over his regeneration process...the Doctor does not due to all of the Time meddling he has done...

Example:

More extreme changes were possible. Cavisadoratrelundar regenerated a complete body after being decapitated- although the process was cut short when she was stabbed through both hearts (the one that she already possessed and the one that she was growing as she regenerated)- and her lover Gandarotethetledrax became a kind of human-Silurian hybrid in appearance when he regenerated in the realm of Avalon mere hours after his previous change.

Yikes..

Another:

In nearly all cases, Time Lord regenerations remained humanoid; one Time Lord, Lord Cardinal Zero, regenerated into an avian lifeform as a result of the poison which triggered the regenerative process.

I.M. Foreman, a Gallifreyan (but not a Time Lord), absorbed the DNA around him and underwent indescribable changes as a result of mutations, transcending sex, species and even physical existence itself. (PROSE: Interference - Book One, Interference - Book Two) Romana, prior to her regeneration into her second incarnation, appeared to have taken on a humanoid blue-skinned form.

If you're looking for a reason why he might have chosen a Female body don't forget that the last person he saw and fight alongside was a woman who was only interested in other girls, he might have changed in an attempt to appeal to that companion even though she left the Tardis.

Also... Does this mean we'll call the show Nurse Who? Har har.... ugh... I wanna die.

But yeah, will watch it and see how it goes, I hope this doesn't drum up too much negative or positive attention one way or the other, should be handled the same way as every incarnation of him, just go into it with an open mind and see where the Tardis takes us :)

Gender doesn't matter at all to me, as long as the character is well written! It will be interesting to see where they go with this

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Did they not 'announce it' by doing the change in an episode? Seems a weird way of doing things. Oh well.

Hmm, pie.

Yeah, I don't know why they always announce it in advance, wish they didn't. Matt Smith & Peter Capaldi were both announced months in advance too. Don't know about David Tennant.

David appeared at the end of the first 'new' series, replacing Christopher Ecclestone, I guess as it wasn't as big back then so they didn't think to announce it but times have changed. David did the work for them making it a world wide success and as we won't see this change for another 6 months... why not announce it before it get's ruined by being leaked.

Actually I just looked it up, David Tennant was announced as the 10th doctor 16th April 2005, the day the 4th episode of the first series aired, so he was announced even further in advance. xD

It just wasn't as big news back then I guess.

I guess BBC are incapable of keeping a secret from leaking out, so they just announce it.
