Forums - Sales Discussion - Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild rises to #1 selling game this year

Congrats to Zelda on selling well but it's a bit misleading as the thread is only about physical copies sold on vgchartz. It's not 2008 anymore and Horizon's high digital attach rate still puts it on top. I know others will just lump the Wii U and Switch versions together to get the higher total but platform specific, Zelda Switch has not actually outsold Horizon....yet that is. It is evitable but still premature. Unless Sony goes with a Horizon Christmas/BF bundle like UC4 did last year. Then it will get interesting.

This was already mentioned time and time again. Horizon sold 3.4 million including digital by April 30th. Breath of the Wild sold 2.76 million by *March 31st* on *Switch alone*. Including Wii U, it sold 3.84 million copies by *March 31st*.

That means that in 61 days Horizon sold 3.4 million copies including digital , giving Horizon an average of 55,737.70 sales per day(it's just an average though, not literal).

The *Switch* version of Breath of the Wild sold 2.76 million copies in 28 days, giving it an average of 98,571 sales per day.

That's almost double the sales, of course averages aren't a perfect measurement because as a game is on the market longer it's average usually gets smaller, but it means that Breath of the Wild sold incredibly fast in less than a month. It's July 14th right now, there's literally almost no way it hasn't passed Horizon on just Switch.

No matter how much you want to ignore the Wii U version, it's practically fact that Breath of the Wild outsold Horizon on just the Switch by this point. This is because the attach rate for Breath of the Wild is much greater, and the glory period for Horizon is over.

Horizon is no doubt still the #1 sku for the year including digital. And it's retail sales have been huge lately with its $40 price point.

Zelda really should be beating it in the end but if Horizon replaces uncharted 4 as the standard ps4 slim/pro bundle this holiday and into next year it can hang with it in the long run.

Crazy to think a game by guerilla is challenging a pillar of gaming culture like Zelda.

Crazy to think a game on a 3 million unit console is challenging a game on a 60 million unit console.

There's no denying Zelda's a huge success (nor that it's an overall bigger success than Horizon), but i can't help but cringe every time i see comparisons like this made :p It's like flipping a coin, but always doing it again if it's not a heads. In the absence of its accompanying variables it's effectively pointless.

Tbh when you add the WiiU version there is not even a contest.

Well said.  it's not a contest at all.  A contest is 1 sku vs 1 sku.

And then Fifa 18 and Cod WWII appears

I stand by my prediction! SMO will not outsell BotW. In 2 years from now I will come up with a thread to celebrate this inevitable fact.

I didn't realize that Resident Evil VII was that high up on the list, I wonder if Capcom are satisfied with those sales.

Nintendo's Q2 report is out on the 26th of July according to their website.

It will be very, very interesting to see their figures on where Zelda stands as of the end of June.

Horizon so close to Zelda and Horizon had stiff competition this year from the top 2 selling games of the year, Ghost Wildlands and For Honor.

And hzd was sold on a 60mil+ userbase.... Not going to factor that in right?

Well deserved, masterpiece. Top of the class in the year of 2017.

Would love to see how well this game would have sold on a 60+ million userbase - closer to 10?
