Forums - Gaming Discussion - Could Apple or Nintendo make VR mainstream?

VR is a niche market until they can put it in something just a bit bigger than a pair of glasses. In fact even then it is a niche market because its main use case is games, and it is really only appealing for first person games. I mean I guess if it is only a little bigger than a pair of glasses it wouldn't be annoying to play other types of games because you wouldn't be strapping on a big headset. But overall even as a gaming device VR just seems pretty damn niche.

No, I don't think it's gonna be mainstream for a long time, likely decades. It'll be a long while before tech advances to a point where VR is in an acceptable state.

VR will be mainstream when you can get a psvr like experience or even better for $200 or under. The price is just too high now.

Hasn't pokemon Go shown that AR is already mainstream? What do you think Apple will add to the AR sector?

who actually bothers playing in AR mode?

this, it's the first thing you turn off when playing

Like the Dlodo V One?

Have you tried VR btw? It's not just first person games that are appealing. Far from it. Many other genres are a lot more comfortable to start out with. VR video is still in its infancy yet it's interesting to see it grow. The Joshua Bell vr experience is where it needs to go.

No. I think VR is going to become something relatively standard, like most display and input devices. I don't think any single company can get VR off the ground.

Also, they will become more appealing once they're wireless and relatively cheap. They're too cumbersome right now.

Who says apple has to do VR`or Nintendo?

Neither of them: Apple sells overpriced HW, so its VR, if it will ever make it, will reach mainstream prices later than the others; Ninty sells cheap HW at a profit since launch, so, for a different reason, it will be able to sell it at mainstream prices late too.

Apple has yet to make an equivalent to the Gear VR, and I believe this is holding back VR in it's potentially most mainstream sector; Mobile. Smart phones have a huge install base and are powerful enough for entry level VR experiences.

Nintendo popularized motion control by integrating it fully into their Wii console. Integrated solutions for new technologies are more effective than peripheral attatchments because you get access to the entire market rather than a fraction of it. Imagine Nintendo creating a VR console in 5 years time with 4K resolution, no wires, 150 degrees field of view, lighter and smaller form factor with support for Mario Kart, Zelda, F-Zero and the VR equivalent of Wii Sports.

VR is something that requires yuuge power for immersiveness and that's something Nintendo can't and won't do since Gamecube. They can't force their cute art through low  resolution, bad fov, cheap optics and tech in VR. The Nintendo way doesn't work in VR. Even PS5 won't likely be ready for 4K VR in 5 years, for Nintendo that would be post 2030 (that's no joke considering how prevalent 720p is on the NS, a res which the og Xbox had in 2001).

Apple will jump on the bandwagon after everybody else has opened the path for them to take everything.

It's not something you should worry about now tho, VR on current tech is never gonna be mainstream. Come back when we have wireless headsets with dual 4K 120hz OLED displays at sub $300.
