Forums - Sony Discussion - Days Gone alternate playthrough for E3 2017 demo--Very different

Didn't see this posted yet. As listed in the title, the video is an alternate playthrough of the E3 2017 gameplay demo. The playthrough is completely different from the one shown on Sony's stage. Pretty neat how weather and other factors can substantially change your experience.

I was unimpressed with Days Gone after the E3 2016 demo and trailer, but every new trailer or piece of info since has given me more hope that this could be a good game.

PROS I see with Days Gone thus far:

-looks like a combination of Horizon and TLoU, which could be great.

-combat and mechanics are looking solid

-ability for the environment (including the zombie mobs and weather) to help you or otherwise affect the game/combat

-enemy variety:  humans, zombie humans, AND zombie animals

-option for silenced weapons other than bow

-strong voice actor (Sam Witwer) in leading role

-"survival vision" and ability to see events after they occurred, a-la Arkham and Horizon

-seems there will be an extensive upgrade system

CONS/concerns for Days Gone:

-using the word "freakers" instead of zombies. This sounds real dumb. The name doesn't have to be zombies, but freakers is terrible. Deacon St. John also feels like a cliche'/cheesy movie/game character name (I know, I'm nitpicking).

-This video shows even further similarities between Days Gone and TLoU (most prominently with the crafting of and use of the Molotov). There's a fine line between drawing inspiration and appearing to copy, and I hope Sony Bend tread this line carefully. This is esp important bc TLoU part 2 will likely release within a year or so after Days Gone.

-the melee combat in this new video makes it look kind of weak

-I worry about the quality of the story, writing, and acting (other than SW), tho I have little to judge this on thus far. My concern includes the biker gang aspect of the game. This could be very cheesy if overdone or done poorly.

Jeez does no one have any interest in this game?

I don't as it simply looks so generic. I feel like I have seen this game a hundred times before.

This is very cool. It definitely feels like an open world TLoU. The gameplay looks very varied too.

Yup, I'll definitely be buying it.

However, I'm not looking for, or expecting a masterpiece like in TLOU. I don't expect the same level of storytelling, cinematic control, as compelling characters, overall polish, or for it to create as strong an emotional connection. It's an open world zombie game from a studio tackeling a project of this scale for the first time. Not the magnum opus of an industry giant at the top of their game for years.

What I do expect is it to (hopefully) be a lot of fun. I expect it will be cheesy, it will be a little rough around the edges. A bit like a B horror movie. However, I'm optimisitc as the devs have said Sony have given them additoinal leash to fufill their vision on this project and in my eyes that means Sony are happy with how it's shaping up. "Giving us as much time as we need" I think was the quote. I think there's a stage in development where you have to cut your losses and release it, or cancel it. If you're giving them totally free reign (especially from a newly promoted developer) your pretty bullish on it turning out well.

I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw at this years E3, and look forward to seeing more of it.

Honestly the only problem right now is that the melee combat needs work ad the guns need some more oomph.

Otherwise I don't see the problem. The TloU2 comparisons are pretty dumb, for the most part.

Many people are drawing TLoU comparisons. It does have similarities to TLoU. I just hope Bend is able to distinguish Days Gone enough and make it unique

I do, but it's too early for the hype cycle, we haven't seen much yet. The issue also is that the zombie genre is too crowded right now and getting hyped for one is more difficult than a more distinct looking game. I'm hopeful the game will turn into a gem like Horizon.

I'm all for the game but it's has a few hurdles to overcome. It is far too reminiscent of the Last of Us, they are gonna have a hard to differentiating themselves from TLoU, at least it terms of setting and atmosphere. The enemy will help a long way towards that, focusing more on MASSIVE wave of enemies and some actual infected animals (zombie bear ftw)

I'm also hoping and praying that maybe his crew are actually the "bad guys." It would be so refreshing to play from the perspective of an bad group of survivors that is terrorizing others survivors and Deacon dealing with the person he's become or something along those lines.

The demo from last E3 was the first time I paid any attention to it. I think it looks quite good/promising.
