Forums - Gaming Discussion - YES! MGS4 more similar to MGS2 than to MGS3!

@rocketpig i agree, the standards are rather low these days and it seems we aren't getting the full product anymore. I rather enjoyed Bioshock, though. Sure, the game could have been better and it seems the story went passed the logical closing point, but I still enjoyed it. My favorite game so far of this generation. What's your favorite game this gen that encompasses what you consider to be at or above standards?

During early development of MGS2, Kojima said he wanted to move on and make MGS2 the final in the series. However, during the development, he added more and more to the story to the point it became so compressed. His original concept was probably much more simple and in the end turned into, well, you saw it, lol. That's probably why he made 2 more, so he could slowly unravel his vision that he intended for the 2nd.

I disagree with rocketpig saying that Kojima isn't a good storyteller; he just doesn't effectively deliver it from time to time.

That's fair. After all, MGS and MGS3 were decent stories. Too convoluted for my liking and the pacing could have been better, but I've seen a lot worse in this industry.

What bothers me most is how low standards are held in this industry. It's starting to really piss me off. Even games that receive accolades from every direction *cough*BioShock*cough* would be considered mediocre at best by the rest of the entertainment industry when it comes to character complexity, pacing, and story depth.

Agreed.  Deus Ex and System Shock 1/2 would be crying about Bioshock right now.  You know, if games were alive and could cry.

1/ I can't understand people claiming, just based on this info, they will not buy the game (do you hear me Darc Requiem)

YOU WILL PLAY AS SNAKE 75% at least !! (my own estimate)

and If Kojima handle the thing correctly, all will be great (and I will consider him as a genious : succeeding in finishing a big story like this is EXTREMELY difficult)

2/ Onimusha12 is banned !!
now I understand why he has still not posted in the thread.

MGS2 was the least favorite game in the series. MGS4 is supposed to be like MGS2. I don't have a PS3. I will not fork over $400 just to play White Knight Story. What is there to understand?

Mass Effect had a tight, well-paced story that didn't try to go beyond its means. It had a decent hero, interesting characters, and a truly despicable villian. It was a solid yet run-of-the-mill story that was well-executed.

I also enjoyed BioShock a lot. I just wanted to see Irrational go the extra mile with that story. Everything was in place to truly make that game epic and then they softballed it.

All of you who say you won't be playing MGS4 I bet will be among the first in line. After playing 3 games in the series you're really not going to play the final chapter just because it's story structure is going to be like the game you like the least in the series?

Heh, you can be guaranteed that I'll be putting my own CQC on anyone that keeps me from getting my hands on this game. :P

Wow, i mean can't you complain about the story, after the game is actually on the shelves. Mgs2 had it's problems but you can't judge the game, since it may have some characters or themes from the second game.

Bioshock was very good at storytelling, I agree, but I think it is hard to compare to MGS's storytelling style. I make comparisons between MGS storytelling and JRPG storytelling, but even those are kind of loose.

Honestly they all have made important contributions, with Bioshock being one of the most important recent examples. I think in terms of politically charged storytelling, the MGS series has outdone any other.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

MGS and Silent Hill are my favorite series, and what is their strongest asset? Storytelling. Much of MGS's story touches on Illuminatist theory as well as real world issues that are culturally relevant. While people can argue the skill of Kojima's storytelling style, he's definitely got something powerful, if you can separate the fantasy from the prophetic meat.
