NES started it all. PS1 made videogame consoles a world wide phenomena. I'd give it to the NES though
The PSX? The PSX was released only in Japan, and barely sold anything. How can it be influential? It did introduce the XMB.
But in all seriousness, its the PS. The video game crash of 83-85 was significant, but the market for video games was already proven. The Atari 2600 was way to basic to make a lasting appeal, and the NES was IMO just a step above. If Nintendo wouldn't have been there Atari or Sega would have filled in the place.
The PS on the other hand is irreplaceable. Made gaming mainstream, launched the concept of a multimedia box, rather than a purely gaming system, and made the 3rd party publishers and developers the ones that actually dictate the shape of the industry, making the genre selection process far more natural and multi-faceted, and giving them a real leverage in what way they want the industry to evolve. So yeah, gaming as we know it would have been far more different (and boring) if the PS was never launched.
Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

LOL those are all third party games I am talking about first party games. |
So what? We're talking about game libaries. I mentioned third party devs several times beforehand too. Also, alot of the games I was looking at were segas. Stop bsing.
The poll should've said "Do you agree that the NES is the most important console in history?" YES/NO

He provided relevant data debunking nonsense and all you got is ad-hominem bullsh. lol. As if his console of choice somehow affects the numbers.
If you were there and still think what you're saying then you simply weren't paying attention. Maybe you were a kid yourself back then and thus could not experience the many great games catered to the older crowd. Sony did a great job marketing the PSone and had a killer strategy losing out on a lot of money to get third party developers on board. But the idea that these people would not have been there making these games had it not been for the PSone is nonsense. If anything, maybe we see less of the shovelware we saw on PSone if Sega or Nintendo were the market leader and naturally saw less sales. Is selling a ton of hardware automatically a great thing now? Do many of you claiming the PSone is the winner here, look back at the Wii library and say it was amazing? I highly doubt it. Like someone else said, gamers who were kids with the NES were adults with the PSone. It makes sense more mature oriented games fared better. Not only that, but technology improved. A game like Dungeon Master II on Sega CD was just as mature oriented as Resident Evil on PSone, it just didn't look nearly as good. How creepy would Guardian Legend from the NES had been if it were a PSone game? Every genre exploded on PSone. Doesn't mean they weren't already there before. Sure it had more mature games. It had more of all the types of games. Again, doesn't mean they weren't there before. Like the rest of the correct people here, I voted NES. The PSone would be a distant second. I can't imagine how the industry would look if the PSone never released. Nintendo made some bad mistakes with the N64 they likely still would have made. I doubt Sega rushes out the Saturn if it weren't for the PSone, but it's still probably a nightmare to develop on. But the industry still would have been here. The NES actually turned the industry around. Fucking lol at the idea that PSone "saved third party developers". Give me a break. Yeah, praise Sony on one hand for all the expansion they achieved but on the other hand ignore all the problems that have come of that and all the hell it has caused for developers. Dreamcast gets the bronze. It introduced the console world to built in Internet access and pay to play multiplayer. Pioneered the online world that now dominates the industry. Also has an exceptionally high amount of amazing games for such a short life. |
I'm just defending my opinion and my post. I don't care if you and the other "correct" people think about the nes saving gaming in america or what not. We're talking about overall effect not just what effected one little country. NEW doesn't compare to ps1 popularising and pushing gaming past the stigma of it being a kid's hobby. If sony sells alot of consoles it's no big deal but if others sell half of that, it's the closest thing to walking on water in your eyes. Consoles sales matter to third party devs because it gives them access to a broader range of consumers to sell their product to compared to. The demographics of the consumers who played playstation consoles versus nintendo's type of consumers were very different from eachother. Nintendo could never have attracted the consumers playstation did. Coupled with nintendo's shit relationship with 3rd parties, the more adult themed gaming wouldn't have taken off on home consoles.
Well I can see why the NES would get that many votes as reviving console gaming is a significant achievement, imo the Pong machine is still the most significant for creating the whole console scene but I can see why NES has so many picks as it is the first modern day console in a sense.
NES. It's not my favourite Nintendo console, but it was possibly the most relevant.

That was also the NES.
PS1 just widened it even further.

In Europe and others, PS still dominates always due to the fact that it popularised it a lot more. NES and SNES didn't break 10m in Europe+Others, PS1 sold 45m+ in EU and others. In Lebanon for instance PS1 was the first to really make an impact on the home console market.
Obviously in America and Japan, Nintendo were the first to do that but they never really broke out world wide till the Wii (apart from the handhelds of course)
