You cant compare DVD with bluray because must people will need to own HDTV to enjoy bluray.

I think most people do own HDTVs.

When was the last time you saw a non HDTV in stores?

The few people who don't own HDTVs are likely the same people who didn't buy a DVD player until like 2002.

BR is a total mess. Apart from the core "must haves" this format will not become the standard. Many many people are sticking with DVD's. It's hilarious but I still see every movie gift as a DVD still. Shame for BR nice try but it's just not going to cut it

Well BR is still trending up YOY,  in fact I believe it will finish at close to double last years sales.  Plus if the industry wants Blu-ray as standard,  they will make it that way

HD-DVD is going to make a comeback!

Better sell all those Blu-ray company stocks....Blu-ray is done for!

I got the movie "Sunshine" on blu-ray from Netflix recently.  I was unable to watch the movie because I couldnt disable the picture in picture commentary that was on by default.  I consider myself very tech savvy and could not for the life of me figure it out.  Was trying to play it on a launch model PS3 and no idea why commentary would default be on.

That was the first big strike against blu ray for me.  The second strike is my happiness with netflix DLNA serving of downloaded media.

If your PS3 is completely up to date with its Firmware, you should have had no issues.  I have over 250 blu-ray movies, all of which have been viewed on a PS3 and never one issue.    There are some titles that come with the commentary on by default but that is always something that can be turned off.

from what I can tell, blu-ray on a weekly average is about 6 - 8 percent higher then last year and DVD is obviously down just as much.

To state the obvious, if Blu-ray is up the majority of the year, and DVD down, Blu-ray is increasing in market share. Also with digital media the overall industry is shifting a bit too. Not overly dramatically though since I know many people who have Netflix and if they enjoyed a movie they will wait till its on sale or the randomly must have it will buy the movie on blu-ray.

Plus player prices are down across the markets, which is helping.

It just makes me laugh but outside of the "tech savvies" people just dont care about BR. A DVD is enough for them at christmas because they don't have to "update" players, fiddle. Can people not see the major drawbacks already to the majority?

Anecdotal I know but the only people who seem interested in BluRay are the Techies and the sub 30 yr olds.

The over 30 yr olds seem to regard themselves as having better things to do and the sub 20 yr olds seem to have gotten used to downloading everything off the internet for free and couldnt give a rats crap about quality.

I still think Blu Ray is an up and coming product.

I just I hoped it was going to be up and coming like a rocket, instead it's wound up being up and coming like a chinese lantern.

Any Updates ?

I will get back to updating this thread as soon as I can.   Ive had some issues the last few weeks but I believe those are behind me.
