Let's not forget that in many parts of Europe the next 14 months are the final phase of the switch-off from analog to digital TV, the most immediate electronic appliance purchase needed by people are either relatively expensive new TVs or cheap decoders, but in both cases, most probably average families with limited budgets will delay purchases of other devices like players and recorders, and also seek advice before buying to avoid odd lots being fobbed off on them.

Actually contrary to economic reasoning I believe the psychological aspect of shopping often times over rides what makes sense and people tend to buy other things like players and recorders as well when they purchase a new TV.

Often true, but now that the purchase of a new TV is practically mandatory for those that didn't buy a new model recently (even in developed countries they are still around 50%), most families could have it totally exhausting their budget for not essential purchases, not to mention, as I wrote, prudence about buying new tech. Consider also that outside of the most consumeristic countries, people are generally a lot less willing to make debts to buy anything different from a house. Anyhow, most of the richest regions of Europe should have already completed the switch off by this year's end, so there could be a first acceleration of devices renewal quite soon, starting from after Xmas clearance sales, I'd guess.

Translation:

Blu- ray sales are on the rise in Belgium.

In the first half of 2010 blu ray sales has doubled compared to the first half of 2009.  Reference SBDPB.

SBDPB expects that the sales of Blu Ray players will pass 600.000 before the end of the year in Belgium. The average Blu Ray movie cost 21,5 Euro = 30,2$

Belgium population almost 11 million.. So 6% of the country bought an Blu Ray player or around 20% of the households has an Blu Ray player..

Don't know how it compares to other countries but the organisation SBDPB is very happy with those numbers.

One more week too put up,  there were good numbers as well,  it was close to a 20% market share.  the 4th Quarter for Blu-ray is really starting to liven up a little.

My target doubled Blu-ray floor space again. Last time they did that was a year ago. Now its almost half of the floor space. Only thing helping DVD's are the TV shows like Martin, 21 jump street, I Love lucy. Things that don't have blu-rays and have 2 seasons attached to them
