Forums - Politics Discussion - 70% of Millennials Believe U.S. Student Loan Debt Poses Bigger Threat to U.S. Than North Korea

North Korea is only as big a problem as the US makes them. Take off economic sanctions, and let the market straighten them out.

Student load debt is a big problem. But, it isn't that big of a deal. It has an easy solution too - stop taking on debt for education. Or, if you really must do so, make sure its management. Go to community college, go part time, or whatever. Don't borrow more than $6-7k per year, and you'll have manageable debt when you get out.

The concept of student loans is so alien to me...

North Korea is actually a big problem. They aren't a threat in the sense that they could do a lot of damage to the US. However, they could land a lucky nuclear strike against a minor US target or a supercarrier. That would demand a massive response from the US and could result in tensions with China.

China supports North Korea because otherwise they would have a US-allied Korea with american military bases right in their backyard. And they don't want to lose that, so even if NK was liberated, I wouldn't be surprised if China intended to replace the current system with a puppet president. That would result in conflicts with the US, and neither country want that kind of hassle.

If the US enters on a conflict with NK, the Kim Jong-un could opt for nuclear strikes against US allies, like South Korea or Japan. Heavy civilian losses for US allies because of a conflict between the US and someone else would have disastrous results for your external politics (like "hey, US can't defend their allies").

My point is that NK obviously can't defeat or even do more than a scratch on the US (and that is with a lot of luck). But they can "die shooting", severly damaging US allies. That could make the US lose allies and end up with a much weaker global position. A diplomatic problem with China could bring economic issues. That's the problems with the NK situation: the best case for the US is minimal or zero gain, while the worst case scenarios would be a big PITA.

China doesn't just want North Korea to stay because they don't want a US-backed Korea, they are also afraid of the massive refugee influx that'd occur if the government collapsed.

If North Korea collapses which is highly likely to happen in the next 50 years the country most affected by it would be South Korea not China.  Most refugees would go to South Korea plus the majority of the population in the North would be for the two Koreas to reunite which would be a huge financial burden for South Korea.

Also, how is psychology useless? Wouldn't you be able to use it if you were, say, a therapist?

Psychology is in pre-paradigm science so clinical psychology isn't of much use but clinical psychiatry on the other hand is since it has a tractable enough framework to be applicable for therapy ...

@OP

70% of those millenials wouldn't have to worry about student debt if they didn't get shitty degrees either ...

LOL took me 6 years to pay mine off get a useful degree and no worry.

That's because it does.

KJU is crazy, but he's not stupid. He also likes the good life sufficiently that he's not the type who would watch the whole world burn just be be king of the ashes. There is no way DPRK would ever launch a first strike vs they USA. The only danger DPRK poses to the USA is if DPRK believes the USA is about to strike first, in which case it will launch. And probably aim at South Korea rather than the USA.

So the way to stop DPRK from launching nukes is to make it feel like it's not in imminent danger of being hit by a massive US strike. The question is whether Trump is both crazy and stupid.

Get a job and avoid student debt it is that simple. You get a college degree and end up working at fast food or super market with a huge college debt or you go straight to work at fast food or supermarket with no student debt.

Let's put it this way - I worry A LOT more about my student loan debt than I do about North Korea...

College is tuition free in Sweden.
You can still take out student loan if you want to. But that's the key word. It's optional. It's not forced upon you just to be able to live or study. So it's mainly for people who want to move out and study without working at the same time. But the smarter move is to just live at home for a few more years while studying at college.

North Korea probably won't do anything to the US, so yeah.

Neat. Are your textbooks payed for too?

Damn, you magically solved everyone's problems! Not like 99% of college kids didn't think of that.
