Forums - Microsoft Discussion - FM7: X version has reached 90 fps with native 4K resolution

Yesterday we have reported an interesting article written by Digital Foundry in which we have analyzed the performance and relative benchmarks of the first titles coming on the new Xbox One X .

Well aside from what we already have discussed in previous news article Digital Foundry has revealed another detail that underlines once again the incredible power that XBox One X has. Of Speaking Forza Motorsport 7 fact, the team has shown how to play (the title B in their lineup ed) could run at a resolution of 2160p (4K Native) reaching a frame rate of 90 fps , the choice of the development team obviously was then to lock it in 60 frames to improve thanks to the power remained more game elements, this an excerpt from their article:

Thus, for example, the frame-time of the title B (almost certainly Forza Motorsport 7) is 13 ms and 11 ms on Xbox One at 4K on Xbox One X. A frame-time of 11 ms would result at 90 fps but obviously the final game freezes at 60 fps we know that Turn 10 will use this overhead to improve the visualization of the new console.

I know if I had the funds to completely go insane it would be over this any day.

That's awesome, they should really turn that extra 30fps performance Into making the weather look more like Driveclub's

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

So it was already 77 fps on XBox One (13 ms), and now reaches 91 fps (11 ms)

But is that average frame time, minimum frame time or maximum frame time. To lock a title at a certain frame rate it would have to be the maximum frame time, which can be quite a bit lower than the average. You only need 16.6ms frame time for 60fps, yet the number for xbox one is 13ms.

In pixel through put, 1080p77 to 4k91 is a 4.72x increase. Quite inline with the increase in GPU power. (4.58x) The question is ofcourse what properties can they increase (like AA, filtering, shadows) before the maximum frame time starts to slip past 16.6ms. We'll see when the actual comparisons comes out.

I wonder if my TV even has a refresh rate that high. I've never seen more than 60fps personally, so I'm not sure how much different/noticeable it is.

Most TV's will not display above 60fps, at least over hdmi, and afaik the ps4/xbo cannot output higher than 60fps video anyway, regardless of if the game can hit it or not.

psvr displays at 120 fps. Normally only via reprojection (ie updates the screen laterally for head movements) which makes head movements a lot smoother than at 60 fps. You can easily see the difference between turning your head physically (which uses the reprojection) and turning via analog stick (which runs at 60 fps). It's much more comfortable to turn your head with the reprojection than the 60fps rotation from the game.

psvr also has two titles with native 120fps (Trackmania Turbo and Polybius) and there it makes things a lot easier to look at as well. In Trackmania you get much less off the cartoon effect when you look at spinning helicopter blades or to a fence flying by on your side, while in Polybius it makes it easier to track the hundreds of objects that fly by at great speed.

So yes, for fast moving games it helps and is very noticeable. Ofcourse, with more serious/realistic racers you're always looking in the distance into the next corner, there it doesn't matter that much. It will feel smoother yet there will be no big benefits as Forza is not a twitch racer.

Most modern tvs have 120 or 240hz smooth motion modes, adding frames in between. However they can't accept higher than 60fps plus it adds a lot of lag (2 or 3 frames at least) for the interpolation to work. HDMI 2.1 promises to fix that. (Mabye next year)

OK. Thanks for the information, I didn't know about that before!
