Forums - Gaming Discussion - Xbox, Gamecube, or Dreamcast?

The best one is...

Xbox 77 13.03%

Gamecube 350 59.22%

Dreamcast 164 27.75%

Total:591

Every console from that generation was worth owning, which is crazy, given that there were four of them.

I voted Gamecube, but Xbox had Halo, Jade Empire, and KOTOR. Dreamcast had Shenmue, Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio. And of course, PS2 had GTA and everything else under the sun.

Yep, exactly that. I experienced similar disappointment and thoughts. I doubt we're alone. Personally I'd even include Mario Kart in that list, but that's probably an unpopular opinion, and I admit there was a different family-situation surrounding Mario Kart 64, which gives me a bias towards the 64 game.

Yeah I also felt Double Dash was a step in the wrong direction as it reduced the accessibility of the series by overcomplicating it.

And I'm sure we're not alone; GCN sold 10 million less than the N64 after all.

I love the N64, but Gamecube had a better library hands down. You could even play Ocarina and Majoras on GCN and it had MGS, Skies of Arcadia, Melee, Prime 1 + 2...

If I were to rank games individually, i would have a lot of n64 games sitting in the top, but looking at it as a whole, GCN brought a lot more to the table.

I haven't forgotten it. An amazing game, and a true classic. But one game, even if it's a masterpiece, isn't enough to tip the scales in GC's favour in my opinion.

Yeah, that makes sense. I was aiming the question more at the people who chose GCN as their favorite, because not many if any mentioned Prime despite listing a plethora of awesome titles in the Gamecube lineup.

Dreamcast. Best controller, Skies of Arcadia, Evolution, and Soul Calibur.

I liked all of the systems of that generation. But, frankly, I've liked every console of every generation. They all have some redeeming qualities. Sometimes that's a technological innovation. Other times, its a must-have game.

Skies of Arcadia, 3 years later.  The first Soul Calibur on Gamecube?  This is the first i've heard of it.  Also, I never did like the GC controller.

For me the better first party lineup + Rare in its prime gives N64 the win. GC did have better third party support, but the main draw of a Nintendo console for me is, well, the Nintendo games.

Rogue Squadron II was always the Gamecube title that I thought was most impressive on the console and Factor 5 even hand assembled some of the code to optimise it as much as possible or so an article I read claimed. It just looked fantastic and performed like a real high end arcade machine of the time. Amazing. I loved Metroid Prime but the graphics weren't very realistic with big blocks of colour and minimal texturing and as much as I loved windwaker visually it was more about the amazing art style. However Rogue Squadron looked better than any Xbox space games and you wondered if the xbox could pull it off to the same standard but then Gran Turismo at 1920x1080i on ps2 also looks very impressive. I do think however that the Xbox could easily achieve that and had quite a few 1080i games.

Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 wasn't native 1080i. Digital Foundry says it runs at 632x448. Still, it did look very impressive for the hardware, yes.

I don't recall Prime having "minimal texturing" though.

At the same time though, I wouldn't say it's one of the absolute best looking GC games; it's sequel looks significantly better, as do games like Rogue Squadron 2 + 3, Resident Evil 4, etc.

Dreamcast in the first place, Gamecube latter. I bought my NGC in 2005 and i really underestimate it, neither really loved it. I was still in my N64. I couldn't cross the next generation gap. I had my beautiful cartridges and now those cold mini cds. I really appreciated its value after 11 years. I bought my DC in 2015 but i had played back in 2007. I really felt in love immediately after playing spawn. Dreamcast takes the first place in my heart because its a really japanese style console. Nice games, nice hardware (i mean the design) and a really cute and funny controller, even controversional :p
