Forums - Gaming Discussion - Microsoft is deserving of praise, not criticism, for XBox 1 not having many exclusives

With exclusives, my opinion is that Sony has done an exceptionally good job the last few years. MS has done about the same as they always have. I think the play anywhere policy is great though.

In other words, I think we should be praising Sony for their good games, and praising MS for their pro-gamer policy.

But the topic is about praising MS for non exclusivity, not praising Sony for having exclusives that are subjectively liked by others.

Also if we're to praise MS for their pro-gamer policy then where is Sony's?.

You'd have to ask Sony.

Of course, we already know the answer - its nowhere to be found.  It doesn't make good business sense for them, as they're no longer in the PC business.  They need their software to sell PS consoles, in order to grow the user base, and encourage further software sales.   Microsoft, on the other hand, has a huge interest in the PC market.  So, if their software convinces you to buy a XB1, great.  If it convinces you to buy a PC, also great.   If you game in either of those places, its good for MS.

So it's a good thing that I have zero concrete reasons to buy an Xbox over a Steam Link?

Which of the two is easier on your wallet? If it's the Steam Link then Microsoft saved you money by making their games more accessible.

Cuphead looks fun and it's coming to PC. Could have been an X1 exclusive but it's nothing but good for the consumer that it's also coming to PC.

I sense some spin here. This new direction isn't because Microsoft is gamer friendly. Their console is getting thumped and they wanna withdraw from the race so to speak. All these smiley-faced pressers and praising the competition are a far cry from 7 years ago.

As evidence of their desire to withdraw from the race: X1X being sold at a loss.

A game is a game regardless of whether or not it's exclusive.

Yea but you're thinking rationally here, fanboys generally don't, they're driven by emotions.

Let's see if we can change that.

Then why even sell a console? It makes the Xbox pointless.

The point of PS4+PC is it has the best spread of available titles for home platforms. Yes, there are a number of games on PS4 that are also on PC, but there is a much larger number of games exclusively on PS4 than there are on Xbox One. It becomes a matter of "Is Halo 5 really worth more than Uncharted 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, NioH, inFAMOUS Second Son, and The Last Guardian combined?"

A PC + a platform with 20 worthwhile exclusives is better than a PC + a platform with 3 worthwhile exclusives.

As a side note, though, PC/PS4 still needs the added bonus of a 3DS to get the absolute best coverage on games.

I think you are missing the point. It doesn't matter how much more exclusives there are on Playstation 4 verses the Xbox One.
It still shares the bulk of it's Library with the PC.

So if you *truly* wish to have the best "spread" of available titles... (Your words, not mine.)

Then you need:
PC+Nintendo.
Sony+Nintendo.
Or.
Microsoft+Nintendo.

It doesn't make sense to have PC+Xbox or PC+Playstation if "spread" is your main issue.
Regardless. You could just get them all. Brand loyalty is bullshit anyway.

That isn't to say Sony doesn't have a ton of exclusives, it has some of the best exclusives this generation, but the majority of it's library is on PC, because the majority of it's library is multiplats.
It's less of an issue for Sony than Microsoft though, thus Microsoft deserves the criticism it gets.

I could live without both the Xbox and Playstation rather easily. I choose not to because... I like games.

I'm not talking about brands, I'm talking about specific platforms. You seem to be reading into a point I didn't make.

Without exclusives, what will differentiate a platform from the competition? The PS4 & XBO are nearly identical in terms of capabilities and feature set. If all of their games were multiplatform, what reason would there be for both console brands to exist? Literally the only reason I continue to invest in Xbox is because of Halo, which I play regularly (I also like Gears, but not enough to buy a console just for it). MS has been very slack recently when it comes to providing a wide selection of quality exclusives, particularly first-party games, while Sony and Nintendo continue to deliver on the first-party and third-party exclusive front.

Yup. Saved me from typing it out myself.

Yeah, not pulling out. But making a move as to say they're not really competing against the PS4. Remember how "units sold" was all the rage for Microsoft last gen? Well that's not their thing anymore. It's now "active users". Obviously touting units sold wouldn't make sense when the competition dwarfs you in that category. Just switch it up a bit and make it sound good.

Remember when power meant nothing to PS fanboys? Then PS Pro released and they mocked X1 fans because rhey became the most powerful. Now X1X is coming and all of a sudden power means nothing. It's all about exclusives now. This type of thing isn't new though. Exclusives have always been the main argument when it comes to console gaming. Now all of a sudden the console with the fewest exclusives should get the most praise. Nonsense!

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Completely agree with the OP. MS were always a PC company and have expanded into the console business in the last 15 or so years. I will likely always prefer console over PC but it´s great that those who play on PC now can be part of the XBox community. As long as they enable more cross play, then it only means the community is growing. Also, MS will be happy no matter where you buy the game, be it on PC or console =).

Everyone knew the XB1X was going to be stronger and deliver better performance than the PS4 Pro before the Pro even launched. Not sure where you were for the past year, but I didn't see many PS fans lauding the Pro over Xbox fans because they knew they'd be eating crow by November 2017 if they did. It's always been a list war to the PS fans, because it's a fight they will win every time against Xbox.

And having less exclusives makes people care even less about your console.
