Despite a very rough first 8 months, 2020 is actually turning out to be a pretty damn good year for the Switch in the end; Doom Eternal, Outer Worlds, Age of Calamity, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Sniper Elite 4, Hotshot Racing, Crysis, Panzer Dragoon Remake, Immortals Fenyx Rising... I was worried this was gonna be a barren year thanks to COVID but thankfully that hasn't been the case.

Ori And The Will Of The Wisps and Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin are the third party games I'm interested in still. That's on top of third party games I already bought this year like Catherine: Full Body, Trials of Mana, No More Heroes 1 + 2, and Hades, of which I still need to get to Trials of Mana, Hades, and No More Heroes 2 (just listing the stuff that released this year, because I also bought the Ace Attorney, Mega Man Legacy 1 + 2 + X1-4, and Castlevania collections). I've enjoyed the third parties from this year quite a bit, think it's actually a fairly strong year in that regard.

Yeah I definitely agree that third parties saved the day after a shockingly bad showing from Nintendo themselves, but hopefully this year's lull has given them time to regroup for a much stronger lineup in 2021.

It's weird. I want  to agree because so much of this year was hurting for big triple A content, but at the same time I was busy with backlog games on Switch and PC anyways, and some of the big games that did come out really spoke to me, like Origami King and Xenoblade: Definitive Edition (though that is just a Wii game, but I think the visuals and streamlined menus honestly helped me get into it a lot). Animal Crossing not so much and Age of Calamity I'm still waiting on getting, but I could see myself coming back to Animal Crossing and having it grow on me, and Age of Calamity is a cool wildcard to have.

2020 in the end wasn't that bad wrt to game purchases, I spent less than 2017 and 2019 but way more than 2018.

I actually bought more games this year than 2017, but the average quality was definitely higher in that year's lineup. Still, this year beat the stuffing out of 2018 for me too.

Hate to be that guy but, it's honestly unacceptable Nintendo had such a bad year with such a breakout console.

The DS's peak years didn't have stellar first party output either, but to be clear, the point I am making is that the quality and quantity of first party software don't directly correlate with hardware sales in any given year.

I understand your post as "Nintendo got so much sales with the little they put out this year. Shameful."

Nintendo spent the three years before 2020 building a strong game library and attractive platform for countless third party developers, and then reaped the rewards for it. The Switch lineup as a whole has people say that it actually doesn't matter much that Nintendo had a rather low-key year (2020 might have seen the release of four games to sell 5m+ lifetime). It was like that for the DS too.

The difference is that Switch is now Nintendo's only console, so instead of having three years like the DS (2007-2009) which didn't provide much new first party-wise, it's just going to be 2020 for Switch.

In any case though, there will always be ups and downs in terms of first party support. Not every year will be equally great. Given how 2020 turned out, it would be shocking if 2021 were worse than that.

@bold no, that's not actually what I meant. I think the sales the Switch got that year are actually fair, I mean it's not like the output consoles with similar sales  at that point in their life were much better. Besides, Nintendo had to bump down their forecast by 3 million, then even missed their new forecast by 100k. That year only ended up shipping less than the first year or slightly above it or something?  That was cause they literally *couldn't* ship more units, of course, but you wouldn't catch me being salty over that performance either. I actually thought the performance over the first year was better than I thought it was, I don't know if I'm missing something but apparently it actually sold less than the first year?

Simply stating that, for my tastes, it was a pretty unacceptable year in terms of output, I would have wanted a company that obviously believed in their product enough to put two separate markets on the line all at once to have better output, but I know that's not really realistic. But hey, I already had a Switch at that point

Their first party output this year definitely wasn't good enough, Age of Calamity was the only game worth buying from them all year for me.

Thankfully, third parties kinda saved the year for me and now I'm actually backed up as I still have Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Sniper Elite 4 on the shelf, and Immortals and Doom Eternal about to release, and I still haven't finished AoC.

I kinda wish these games had been spread more evenly throughout the year instead of all packed into the final 4 months.

From the records I've been keeping.....2020 I bought more games/DLC content than any other year and beating my previous record which was back in 2018.

Notice the trend...going from "No Job/Poverty" to "$12 a hour job" to a "middle class wage/income" makes a big difference.

2020: 692
2019: 512
2018: 646
2017: 363
2016: 316
2015: 447
2014: 263
2013: 183
2012: 37
2011: 6
2010: 3

This is what I have spent on software (not counting hardware) these past years in euros.
Seems like a normal year for me is in the high two hundreds.

2020: 215
2019: 284
2018: 119
2017: 274
2016: 92
2015: 271
2014: 255
2013: 262

Wow, my yearly record for most games bought is 2010 with 22 games.

For Switch I've bought:

7 games in 2017

3 games in 2018

13 in 2019

8 this year, will be 9 by the end.

I got my Switch during this past Black Friday week. I have a total of 27 Switch games. I am expecting to buy one more before the end of the year and that is for Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light

Been buying games for the past month for my Switch, PS4 and on Steam as well.

And these are the accessories and non-gaming electronics I bought as well during Black Friday week.

Objectively, what would be the score of each game in that list?

When asked about cloud games on Switch, Panic Button indicates they'll keep making challenging native ports to the hardware:

https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/55644/doom-eternal-interview-with-panic-button-games

"I think it’s an interesting tech. I think it’s young and that there’s a place and audience for it, but doesn’t necessarily change anything on our horizon. We’re going to continue taking on challenging projects to get these on the hardware and for people to be able to use offline and when they want to. I think that’s one of the greatest things about the Nintendo Switch - you have the ability to take it and go off the grid, so we’re going to continue doing what we do."
