Super Mario 3D World's variety in themes demonstrated that the problem wasn't that Nintendo had no ideas for Mario games anymore, but rather that they crammed pretty much everything new into the 3D games of the same era. That was deliberate.

But aren't the 2D & 3D series developed by completely different teams? So couldn't the issue be that the 2D team lacked ambition while the 3D team didnt?

They are developed by different teams, but when the same eight world themes are used for the third and fourth time, then it has to be an order from the higher-ups. When a general producer looks at such an important game and it has only the same world themes as before, he would normally tell the development team to add more fresh stuff, either by making the team come up with something or by having the team contact other teams (such as the 3D Mario team) for inspirations. But since that didn't happen, we can either conclude that the general producer was oblivious to what was going on or that he actually ordered the game to be like that. It's just so farfetched that the follow-ups to games that sold 20m+ copies went ignored by Nintendo's leadership in software development.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Nintendo Switch eShop Best-Sellers as of 3/2/2019

This list, is it best sellers of all time for each region or just for a certain time period?

It's the best-selling games of that time period/week, not all-time.

I would love to see the sales data for Final Fantasy IX. It's been consistently near or at the top of the list since it released.

I tried Tetris 99 today. I got a third place finish on my second try, but that was my peak performance in ~20 attempts. My average finish is probably around 20th place, too bad that the game doesn't show such a stat. In any case, I very much doubt that I have a real chance to be one of the top 999 players this upcoming weekend. I'd expect that double digit wins are necessary despite most competitors not getting any wins, but my odds of winning a round are very slim.

I also checked out the NES app and the more obscure games in it aren't any good. It's stupid that the games can't be played with Y+B, so the unusual X+A combo is the best way to play the games.

The reason why I activated my free trial is Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Getting all rare blades is much more manageable with the help of a cloud save. Bad luck isn't a huge problem with a cloud save. I now have gotten all rare blades on the save file I started this year, so I can attempt a complete file without worries. First playthrough clocked in at 105 hours, finished all sidequests and mercenary missions, got 43 of the 45 available rare blades to rank S. Things to do on new game+:

1. Get all 52 rare blades to rank S+
2. Kill all 85 unique monsters on all four difficulties (a guy in Garfont keeps track of all completion times)
3. Finish the battle arena on all four difficulties
4. Finish all sidequests and mercenary missions again
5. Complete the affinity charts of all 5 drivers, as well as their movesets for all weapons
6. Equip each rare blade with a great core chip
7. Get good equipment (drivers) and augments (blades), prerequisite to beat the challenges in the battle arena

I peg the second playthrough at 75 hours, bringing the total to 180 hours. Grinding the various things will take time, but it's very hard to say how much.

Wow, Square knows how to piss off people well with the pseudo sequel for Octopath Traveler, a recent success on Switch, announced for smartphone devices ...

It is described as a prequel to the first game on Switch .... maybe we could get a port later.

There will be 8 stories just like the main game and they'll add additional ones each month it seems, new locations not present in the Switch game will also be present, No Multiplayer element too, it's a single player experience ...

I mean they could have just made this into a DLC for the main game, c'mon !

Ehhh ... Octopath took a year and a half from it's first showing to release, and it had probably already been in development for a long while at that point. This is probably a shorter mobile game that was developed in a small time frame with reused assets. I wouldn't be pissed off much, I don't think it means that they're spending resources on smartphones or that they're not developing a sequel for Switch. It just means they're making a stop-gap game to cash in on another market. Especially considering Bravely Default 3 and Octopath 2 are a high probability, as they're two separate teams. But this is all speculation lol.

Then again I'm not an Octopath fan xD

Getting first in Tetris 99 is near impossible, just make sure you use KO as your targeting at the beginning of the match to try and build up metals. The good news for the event though is that its separated by region from what I read. So NA get 999 winners, EU gets 999 and JP gets 999 winners. So your chances area bit better. but you most likely are correct that double digits wins will probably still be necessary.

NES app is just lame so far

This reminds me I still need to get the Torna Expansion. I've been hoping for an eventual retail sale on it.

Metals? Must be what made the screen flash so frequently in one of the matches I played. I tried out the various options for general targeting, but didn't find any particular useful.
