Compared to the vitriol that 3D World was receiving before its release, I don't think the comments regarding New Donk City are even worth mentioning.

I think the city looks cool and it fits the grand adventure feeling of the game, the sense of being in a big travel across the world. I like that Nintendo is trying new kinds of levels and settings for this game, instead of using the same boring NSMB-like generic levels.

It looks fine to me, and the overall reception is pretty good

The main skepticism is probably when Sonic got mashed into the real world, and people worry this will end the same :p

3D World got torn APART and yet its one of the best mario games ever made.

It bugs me because it implies that Mario is not a regularly proportioned human fr Brooklyn but some mutant cartoon character from a different world. I always wanted a Mario game to take place in Brooklyn but I assumed the art style would reflect Mario.
