TL;DR
Miyamoto was in an interview and he said several interesting things.
Regarding not always being in the spotlight:
-He's had a 30 year career making games, so he's not always going to be the leader. Fresh, young minds is what keeps Mario going on.
On Mario's expanded appearances:
-Mario works so well due to his versatility. We saw him outside the mushroom kingdom, in outer space, and now in places like the city. He's also appearing with characters from non-nintendo franchises (Rabbids). The magic of him comes from this constant change
On remaking Mario games:
-He personally believes Mario games shouldn't be remade. Rather, going forth and making new games is better in his opinion
It's a rather solid article, and I'd recommend reading it all the way. He brings a lot of good points, but I do disagree on his last point. If there's one Mario game (that isn't a spinoff) which is outdated, it's Mario 64. That game would benefit greatly from a remake. Besides that however, most Mario games are timeless in my opinion
