Forums - Sales Discussion - A little milestone that people have not noticed - the PS4 has outsold the NES

Yeah, I'm glad that the PS4 is selling well, I think it's a great console. But the comparison doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I mean, the eras are way, way too different xD.

You are taking numbers without context again. There are a lot of countries that never got an NES. Ask Russia how much they played with their NES in the 80s.
Also the NES had to compete with Atari and Sega.  Sega did such a good job in Europe that the Master System outsold the NES in Europe.

what home console did atari have during the nes era? and how many did it sell?

Atari 7800. Also Commadore 64 and similar computer consoles were very popular then and more than I can name. IN the UK NES faced ZX Sprectrum and lost. PC Engine massively popular in Japan. Everyone and their dog was making some sort of console or PC compat system. I don't have exact figures but I think 7800 was 4 million,PCE is 10 million,SMS 10 million. Could argue C64 and others were in their own market. If so 7800,PCE and SMS were the NES direct competition overall but in some places regional systems like ZX Spectrum.

When you consider the market difference between 1985 and 2013, it's not really that impressive. It's like comparing revenue for movies and not adjusting for inflation. The NES selling 60 million units in the climate it launched in is like the PS4 selling 300 million units.

It'd be more impressive if NES Classic hadn't been the most wanted console for the past 12 months.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

It is selling over a million a month consistantly. Not even the release of a new console (switch) took much out of its sales and if it did it bounced back hard. 100 million + by 2020/21? ....I think so if not closer to 110.

I think that the Switch release won't affect PS4 sales, because they're actually aimed at different people. I think +100M is doable if they don't release the PS5 pretty soon.

Gott say they aren't really, this is now the time of the PS4/switch combo, I'd say Xbox have less to loose on that front but many Sony fans are Japan focused and I'd reckon there is a huge overlap.

Maybe, there're a percentage of people who choose to buy only the Switch and not the PS4. But I don't know if that percentage will be too relevant for PS4 sales tbh.

I must say I'm particulary happy about the PS4/Switch combo though :P.

Why would that make it more impressive?

Nice, it was only a matter of time!
The only Nintendo home console which sold similar to the Playstation level was the Wii and PS4 will overtake it too.
