Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Level-5 considering past projects for Switch and more.

Another new interview is in with Akihiro Hino. This time, GameSpot is the latest outlet to have spoken with the Level-5 CEO. Topics include potentially bringing past projects to Switch, why Katrielle is the new protagonist of the Layton series (and whether or not she’s really Professor Layton’s daughter), and reminiscing on Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Find these excerpts from the interview below. You can read GameSpot’s full interview here.

On bringing older Layton games to Switch / mobile…

With Layton’s Mystery Journey on smartphone, we’re getting that know-how, the knowledge of how to move it onto the smartphone platform. And we are actually looking into trying to bring past projects onto maybe a smartphone, maybe even a new console, like Switch. But nothing is really decided yet. We’re looking into that right now.

On switching the protagonist to Katrielle with Layton’s Mystery Journey…

In the Layton stories, he solves mysteries to tackle a bigger mystery. That was the core of the story, and that’s the Layton series’ defining characteristic. But I felt like for this seventh one, by switching to his daughter, we’re able to create a more everyday kind of mystery that people might actually run across. And then it’s a young, vibrant atmosphere, which we thought would bring in a more interesting, new story for all the fans out there. And this is a little bit of a secret, but Layton will probably appear a little bit in these series too. [laughs]

On whether Katrielle is really Professor Layton’s daughter…

So the whole question of whether or not she’s really his daughter, that’s also part of the mystery of the Layton series. Just keep playing and you’ll find out a little bit more about the history behind that.

On the crossover game with Phoenix Wright…

Phoenix Wright has a close relationship with Capcom. So in order to bring about that idea of “impact” that I mentioned earlier, we thought it would be a good crossover. And it was also a way to bring an interesting plot to both fans communities. For that collaboration, Capcom was primarily in the driver’s seat, so a little bit more of the creative leaderships goes towards the Capcom side, but it was something I enjoyed creating too.

Always get annoyed when I click on a level-5 topic.

I come in with some hope of reading about like Rogue Squadron coming back or something and then see a professor Layton pic or something and realize I confused level-5 with factor-5 again.

lol i did the same

Ni No Kuni I and II compilation?

That'd be cool, I've never played a Layton game before, so it'd be nice to have a release that compiles the games together, or something like that.

Give me a Ni no Kuni port on Switch and I'll buy it at a high price.

Bring over Ni no Kuni 1 and you'll have a purchase right here.

AStill determined to try and drag the Layton audience kicking and screaming onto phones I see.

And yeah, go ahead and try bringing over years old games to a new system and see how that goes. It went smashingly for the last several 3rd parties that tried that. Unless it's Skyrim or Minecraft or some similar juggernaut, you might as well build a big pile of money and set it on fire.

Here's a brilliant idea, how about you develop a new Layton game for Switch? Or a new Yokai since you seem so hell bent on milking that franchise to oblivion? Or how about you - heaven forbid - bring over the Ni No Kuni games? You know, stuff that's relevant?

Probably shouldn't be too demanding though, or we'll probably get a card game spinoff, a beat em up spinoff, and a rhythm game spinoff for each of those. This is Level-5 we're talking about.

Yeah, the last part of his post

I did wonder the same at first though, almost googled it to see what the relation was, then saw that he mentioned Rogue Squadron was developed by factor 5 (who I've never actually heard of before) and thought "yeah, that's a pretty similar dev name, I get it now".

Maybe he's gotten Rogue Squadron and Rogue Galaxy mixed up lol, seems the most likely answer :P

Nah they meant Factor 5 which is now basically dead made Rogue Squadron, which is argubly the best star wars game based within the timelines of the movie, they are dead in large part to something offtopic and rant inducing, and if you want to hear more, just PM.

Given the best confusion between my friends and I is monolith productions and monolith soft.

I would love to see Fantasy Life on Switch. What ever happened to the sequel that was to turn out on mobile?
