Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why I am not participating in mid-gen refreshes this gen.

Hello there,

In these great days of inceased competition and product saturation, we (mostly)  find ourselves) in a predicament when companies try to renew their initial products within the generation. These are great and far be it from me to say it is useless but at some point the competition takes a toll. Before I delve further into this, let me just give you my reasoning for my state of mind. The problem is in itself....product saturation and the high level of competition which leads to massive sales and created a huge backlogue.  I, my friends, do not have a bottomless wallet like many here. I realized my limit after I realized that owning all three consoles was within my budget for this gen. Its not like I am strapped for cash, but I do have a life and other things do matter.

Back to the point.....

With the amount of money that I have spent this gen, it seems rather rational to me that I shouldn't invest in  4k UHD HDR capable television so soon. This has made my former will  for upgrading to the Pro and Xbox One X come to a screeching halt. The actual costs of upgrading (all tech or even one and a proper tv) could cost me almost the amount of I spent on all three platforms combined at launch (or more depending on the tv).

In the end, we all now know that next gen will be the true 4k gen. Within the next three to four years the amount of 4k adopters will most likely have increased by 20-30% in America. The more the mass market invests the easier it will be for us to buy 4k TV's with HDR. These upgrades with the new console gens coming will only last us a couple of years before we upgrade again.....so even then it fails to inspire a purchase from me.

With that said.....how does everyone feel about upgrading this gen? It doesn't matter whether you do or do not.

Not gonna upgrade. If I already have the console, I'm not gonna buy a new one. Unless the revision for the Switch is good. Otherwise I've never gotten a revision for a console.

Honestly, the is Switch is the only one I've really considered if it does get one, because I love it so much.

I already bought a 4k TV over a year ago and don't regret it, but I did for movies and TV shows, 4k console gaming is still pretty far away, especially for any mainstream device so I agree with the mid-gen upgrade.
It's pleasant to note that my predictions for the 8th gen have been more or less spot on so far though...

I'm not too excited about upgrades, because I never cared about grfxx too much anyway. I have no problem with playing games at 720p or something, as long as the gameplay is good. Also I have way better ways to spend my money on. I don't like burning money just for minimal upgrades. Plus I think it's a complete waste to buy a new TV when your old one is working just fine. I didn't upgrade to HDTV until my Sony Trinitron gave up working and I won't upgrade to UHD as long as my HD TV is working just fine.

I still got the Pro though. My launch model PS4 died some months ago, so I went to the store to get a new one. They just happened to have the Pro in stock and I had the choice between the Slim with Horizon for 299 € and the Pro for 399 €. And I was like, yeah, hm, ok, get that Big Mac. It was a spontaneous decision, nothing more. Until today, I didn't notice any differences besides Remote Play in 1080p, which is nice.

Good to see you were spot on with the predictions. What cojnsoles do you have right now and will you be upgrading at launch next gen?

Hmmm... most reviewers said that the upgrade from the PS4 to the Pro is not that great.  Its not worth the upgrade because the change is only slight. Being that you got the console that didnt come with Horizon, are you planning on getting that game or have you already played it?

If I had too much money and would actually care about having the best graphics available on console I would totally go out and buy the Pro. But I really dont have that much money and could care less.
Im happy as my games look great and I can play them all :) Thats what every console owner cares the most right? :)

Its pretty cheap to upgrade considering that you can sell your current hardware and then the upgrade is much cheaper.

But not doing it is also a choice, which is good to have choice.

I don't have a 4K TV or PSVR so don't feel the need to upgrade, I'll probably wait until PS5.

Why I'm not going to? Because I don't see the point in spending (launch pricing) $700.00 on console. My launch PS4 plays the same games that their Pro does. That's all I care about.

It does matter. The new consoles improve the 1080p experience and performance.

Should you buy one? That is up to you. It's not essential.
