Forums - Gaming Discussion - Psyonix will continue to work with and update Rocket League rather than making sequels

Psyonix isn’t setting its sights on creating sequels to Rocket League. Rather than turning it into a franchise, the main game will continue to receive updates and released across new generations of hardware.

Jeremy Dunham from Psyonix told Engadget in a new interview:

“We’re not trying to build six Rocket Leagues. We’re not looking forward to when Rocket League 2 and 3 and 4 are coming out. Rocket League is the game we’re gonna keep updating. It’s important to us to keep that going, cross-generation, across multiple platforms without sacrificing anything.”

Rocket League is a similar position as Minecraft. Minecraft itself has been so hugely popular that a sequel hasn’t been necessary, and the game is continually updated and put out on new systems.

I'd say good call. This type of game doesn't need sequels and this creates a stronger community rather than divide.

Until people just burn out of the game and leave. There's only so much you can do with the the same game. I'd rather new, innovative sequels than one updated game for a decade.

Well, duh. There is nothing a sequel could provide that the current game can't. It's not Fifa. They've been supporting this game constantly for 2 years now and are putting millions into esports. They will continue like that for at least another 2 years. After all, they're making a shitload of money.

There is only so much you can do, but it's a pretty basic game and has been going strong for 2 years now and people aren't tired of it yet it seems.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

The core gameplay of RL is strong and timeless and it also helps that there is zero competition in that genre. And as I said in my other post, there is nothing a sequel could provide that DLC to the current game can't.

RL is 2 years old and still gets over 200k concurrent users regularly. And that is despite nobody talking about it. This will go on for quite some time until a competitor steps up.

It's the new Minecraft.

Funny because this game IS a sequel. Tweaking the gameplay and renaming it helped a lot.

The concept was good.

It just needed some graphic/gameplay tweaking, and a new name :)

That and word of mouth, it being free on playstation for abit really helped spread it, esp in europe the game is huge.

Everything gets stale. Eventually, people will leave and they'll either have to make a new game or do something else.
