Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie: the 4K audience is “a bit too limited,” talks fan feedback

We're already at the point of diminishing returns in my opinion, I literally just came back from JB Hifi where just for reference I checked out the 1080p/4K screens and the difference is negligible.

It's such a waste of processing power when that same power could be used for things that are actually noticeable like better lighting, effects, materials, etc.

The ps4 pro isn't that much stronger then the ps4 yet it can give the resolution a big bump.  It's not as tasking as you think and will become pretty easy by the time ps5 hits.  It's the new standard and a needed one.  After 4k we might not need to go higher but we shouldn't settle at 1080p.

4K is four times as many pixels to fill as 1080p. Spending quadruple the power on making the picture a tiny bit sharper is hugely wasteful in my view. As far as I'm concerned, it's just a scam to try to get people to buy new TVs.

He's not wrong. And it's hard to say where Nintendo is headed for their future platform but I'd imagine they'd support it in TV apps and checkerboard gaming.

e=mc^2

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

I agree with Phil when he said people associate Xbox with power. We havent done that for Nintendo since the early 2000s.

High end specs appeals to the Xbox and Playstation users.

The X1X isnt just a 4K box. Some games may just be 1080p with really high quality assets and smoother performance.

If youre running a 4K TV, you want 4K content. That's not a debate. But bear in mind some PS4 Pro games go for better graphics over higher resolutions or let you choose.

In theory X1X has the power to push many PC to virtually highest settings with room to spare for resolutions higher than 1080p.

Hence, its not just a 4K box and we will see that in practice.

I'd be happy if they didnt even make 4K TVs at all.

This is no surprise at all.

Remember when the Wii came out? Gamers were pissed it wasn't HD. Reggie simply said "Sorry, we don't feel like enough people have HD tvs to justify making an HD console".

They'll go 4K eventually probably, but with games that have a timeless, artistic aesthetic, you don't really NEED to rely on resolution to make a gorgeous game.

1080p TVs are definitely more available and widely adopted than 4K. How does that allign the supposed logic you are purporting with what Reggie said?

His logic is that a reason to hold back on 4K is because the audience is too limited. This may be true. Full-HD TVs on the other hand are not too limited, still the Switch barely does games in 1080p. Not even games with last gen graphics. So what makes you think Nintendo will fully support 4K resolution when 4K TVs actually are commonly found in households?

Contrary to popular belief you do NOT need a 4k TV to take advantage of games rendered at 4k.

1440P seems to be the sweet spot now as far as affordable tech for the resolution is concerned, even mid-range graphics hardware like the Radeon RX 580 and Geforce 1060 slay that resolution.

And because of such the Wii aged extremely poorly and didn't last for very long time on the market.

Well this is how resolution upgrades always start. Its here before people want it and eventually people want it.

People seem pretty happy Nintendo content is finally hitting 1080p.

We are at a point where 4K is feasible and it doesn't cost a fortune. Sony and MS tend to lead the way on specs also, having powerful consoles that play the visually impressive games is what they do.

As a Nintendo gamer I'm just pleased that Nintendo aren't pursuing it, since I don't see it as worthwhile.

4K is nice and all, but a nice 1080P image is still eye pleasing on either a tablet size screen or a TV that you're sitting 5-10 feet away from.

I'd rather Nintendo get a Switch that can display even regular XB1/PS4 tier visuals at 1080p in a few years. That'd be fine. The Nintendo games with that kind of horsepower behind would be breathtakingly gorgeous.
