Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could Mario Odd. lead to a platformer resurgence?

I'm not sure why they fell off the map in the first place. I know why 2D platformers went away, because technology shifted and 2D became previous gen and no one wanted it until nostalgia, art direction, and the shininess of 3D everything wore off.

But there's never been a reason why 3D platformers would fall into disuse. I don't think sales were even the problem, developers just seem to have forgotten to make them as they pursued other genres.

The extreme dominance of shooters for awhile really hurt the genre as it was perceived as "kiddie" by too many. Thankfully we seem to be out of that era of gaming and I think gamers now are more open to appreciating a good game in any genre. Which is also really working to Nintendo's advantage in general right now.

Knack already caused a platformer resurgence

Amazing for a game that isn't a plat former!

I think the only franchise close to 3D mario Ratchet & Clank (in terms of quality and talent) is ratchet and clank 3D Mario, so enjoy ratchet and clank.

Fixed that for you

Cant speak because i have never played a mario game after the nes one. I dont like mario. I am more the Zelda guy. But i think it will have an effect yes.

If Bubsy can come back, anything's possible.

Hold on! I'm real happy u like Ratchet and Clank, and imma let u finish, but the original Jak and Daxter is the best non-Mario platformer of all time! Of all time!

Fixed that for you as well. (As long as we say that R&C is a shooter platformer hybrid, so it isn't in the same category)

There have always been platformers. Perhaps they took a detour to 2D for a while during the Retro movement, but 2D and 3D seem to be balancing more now. I don't believe that has anything to do with Mario specifically. New Super Mario Brothers and the Wii VC did help to speed up the Retro movement, though it would have happened eventually due to the amount of indie developers and digital titles coming onto the scene. Super Mario Odyssey will certainly inspire a developer or two to try their hand at a new quality platformer, but any good game does that.

I doubt it. This clearly looks like the worst 3d Mario game since Sunshine. Maybe it surprised but I think we're looking at a thud.

If you looked around you, you should know that's already happening.

This I fully agree with. You've got a plethora of platformers on Sony's and Nintendo platforms. And most of the quality ones have done fairly well. Games like Mario Odyssey is just a continuation of the genre.
