Gen 9 will happen. PS4 and XBO are still the baseline for exclusive titles being developed for well into 2019 if not even 2020.

We may see even one more higher tier version of the PS4 and XBO before PS5/XB4, and we will absolutely see a Switch revision or two in that time as well.

A baseline for games is an absolute necessity. Developers have to have a target for games as technology is always growing. Low cost devices with mass adoption are the best thing they can build to. A game built exclusivily for the best CPU and GPU available on the market, will never make its money back, because it will be years, and years before the cost comes down and enough people even have a device capable of running it.

PS5 and XB4 will be a significant power increase over PS4 and XBO. It is not going to be the measly Ryzen + Vega @ 12TFLOP & 16GB GDDR6 people seem to be so hot on. PS5/XB4 will be Ryzen+ 7nm or 7nm+ that was leaked in AMD docs a few weeks ago. They will have Navi and beyond based GPU tech @ 20+ TFLOPS. They will support a minimum of 32GB of GDDR6 or HBM RAM, and they will have some form of SSD storage.

PS5 and XB4 will set a new baseline that once again open up new game design, new graphical techniques, better AI, more precise controls, better networking, and much more. The jump to 32GB of RAM will allow them to draw two 4K images for VR, the more capable CPU will allow them to reach higher frame rates, and the SSD will allow load times to remain constant or even shrink.

As far as Switch is concerned. It is either a 9th gen console, a 6th gen handheld, or a ~3rd/1st gen Hybrid depending on who you are. As far as the games go, it is pretty close to a PS3/360 with a few new tricks up its sleeve. I mean this in no way as something bad. I absolutely love the Switch, the time I have spent with it has been a blast, and I can not wait to get my own once Mario Odyssey is here. This is just what I came away with after a few days with the unit, and about a dozen games so far.

I believe the industry is in the best place it has ever been with all three platform holders doing solid in the console business, and Windows, Mac, and Linux getting great support on the PC side. You get a choice no matter what ecosystem or type of device you want to play on. Flexability within the 5 - 8 year console cycle is something that is long over due, and something that allow the next generation to really blow us away.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Gens are stupid and are only a method for console makers to justify no BC or FC.

Not sure if trolling. Or very.... much out of touch with reality.

I've met people on VGC who would not accept a console as a new gen if it doesn't have exclusive games to it. That's what I call out of touch with reality.

You tell me what the definition for a new console gen is because the ones I've heard so far are pretty damn moronic.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Switch is a part of gen 9 and consoles gens will be around for as long as there's consoles around. Console launches were never aligned with each other in a console gen and PCs have always been able to be upgraded constantly if you wanted but yet console gens have been around for awhile in spite of your points.

How is switch gen 9 though it's not even much above ps3 if any things it's just a very late gen 7.5 console

Console Gen 8 :

PS4 + PS4slim + PS4pro
XB1 + XB1s + XB1x
Wii U + Switch

Switch isnt gen 9, it belongs to the same generation of technology as that of PS4/XB1.
Its not more advanced, its not faster, it doesnt do anything the PS4/XB1 doesnt (graphics/technology wise).
Its portable, but that doesnt give you a "+1 gen".

Even if you disagree with this....

Generations no longer matter.

Scorpio and the Nintendo 2DS XL are releasing after Switch and are still considered Gen 8.
So time frames aren't something that's factored in when deciding console generations.

Power obviously isn't either as Wii U is considered Generation 8, yet could easily be lumped in with the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in terms of power.

I think generations has to do with the technology inside.

"our box can do this new methode of rendering, such and such, this and that, which is new compaired to last gen"

Also generations are about which products your up against.

Switch isnt 9th generation, if it spends most of its lifetime competeing against the PS4/XB1 that are considered 8th gen.

Switch belongs to the same generation it spends most of time with.

Also apart from being portable, I dont think the Switch, in terms of graphics is able to do 1 thing that the PS4/XB1 cant.

Nothing that makes you go "okay this is next gen stuff".

There will be a PS5. Not sure about Xbox though.

The Switch I call Gen 9. I mean, I don't care about generations at all, but it's hilarious as fuck to see some people getting mad over it. They gonna scream and yell at you about how Switch isn't Gen 9 and I'm not allowed to call PS4 and X1 Last Gen and blah blah blah. It's funny as hell, you should try it!

That sounds stupid, if gens are not dead then the switch is 9th gen its that simple in my opinion.

Why can't a console manufacturer release two consoles in a single generation and have it lumped in as the same gen?

They can look at the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X

The Switch is not the same gen as the Wii U they don't have anything in commen

Twitter @CyberMalistix

I play games from all generations. I have a console for ANY game that comes out at this point in time. Generations are meaningless. The "PS5" will be nothing more than a new Pro while the old pro becomes the new low end and the OG PS4 is phased out.

If you cannot see this by now, you are in denial regardless of what Sony says. I suspect Nintendo to follow suit with the Switch.
