Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Don't Assume Nintendo Will Drop its 3DS/Handheld Line: Here's Why

I loved your post.

I agree with most of it...

Nintendo will not leave handheld market just yet... Switch Mini will be a thing... and foldable...

Switch!!!

You say this now, but the 3DS will be a distant memory by this time next year.

It is actually crazy someone thinks Nintendo will continue supporting a last gen hardware despite them dropping every other last gen hardware like a brick in the past 20 years.

Also "DS and GBA Were Both Handhelds", the Switch is a handheld as well. In a poll I saw the majority of people that upgrade to Switch are 3DS owners. It's not shocking me, most people who are furious about 3DS still being alive are 3DS owners who bought a Switch. They want more games on their new handheld.

I agree with you that 3DS won't be relevant this time next year, but you're wrong about them dropping existing systems. DS was supported well after 3DS released; it even had some exclusives like Pokémon and Solatorobo as well as tons of third party games. Btw, 3DS is getting an even better post support than DS... this year alone, the year of Switch's launch, it's getting exclusively Ever Oasis, Mario + Luigi: Superstar Saga, Metroid: Samus Returns, Hey! Pikmin, Fire Emblem Echoes, Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, Miitopia and probably some stuff I forgot. It's amazing support! But yeah, next year, the 7th year after launch, it will be almost dead.

Btw, Switch is a hybrid, that's common sense and the general consensus as well. lol Also, 3DS sold 5x better than Wii U, of course more 3DS owners will pick it up.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

That was a nice text to read, actually.

We all know that until next year there will be plenty of new games for the 3ds, but mainly games which production started this year. Japanese Devs and Nintendo are not ignoring the huge install base the 3ds still has

After 2018, we probably won´t see new games for it with the possible exception of some indie games. It´s clear that, from now on, Nintendo will focus on the Switch, since it can be used as a portable console too. I expect most of the great 3ds franchises (Layton, Ace Attorney, Etrian Odyssey, Yokai Watch etc etc) to have new games for the Switch soon.

In the Nintendo Spotlight, Ishihara said that Game Freak is developing a "core RPG Pokémon title" for the Switch. How can that be interpreted as anything other than mainline? He called it a core RPG, and Game Freak has never made any Pokémon games other than the mainline ones.

You don't get it.

Dulfite wants mainline Pokémon to remain on handhelds, thus Ishihara meant it as a spin-off.

False, I'd love the mainline series to be on switch. I just don't want to get my hopes up. We've had rpg like Pokemon games on consoles before and they haven't been the mainline series.

Why am I not surprised that the usuals are all over this thread refusing to accept the possibility that Nintendo might do anything other that what they believe Nintendo is doing. They even went so far to insult the OP for even suggesting that Nintendo might release a 3DS successor.

Man ohh man, how hilarious would it be if Nintendo actually does it.

OP. Your ideas have merit, and your points are valid. It's a legitimate possibility despite what others on this site might say.

No dufflite, I don't think you understand. If you don't take everything Nintendo says and does in the most validating way possible to support what some would believe is a great thing Nintendo should be doing, then you're a nintendo hater who wants to spin everything Nintendo says. Just look at how many people on this site legitimately believe I'm a Nintendo hater because I have the audacity to call them out for their bullshit when they do bullshit things.

I actually don't really know if the "Switch can't play DS/3DS library" bit is true.

One curious thing about the 6.2 inch screen size is when positioned vertically, the screen is the *exact* size width wise in that config as a regular 3DS. Funny coincidence no?

They could theoretically offer a cradle that can position the JoyCons on Switch vertically for DS/3DS backwards compatibility and sell DS/3DS games through the eShop.

3 remakes, a mediocre spin-off, an enhanced version of an already existing game and a couple of low budget games is "amazing" support? Cause it feels very much like the crappy support a system gets after the release of its successor, and no better than the stuff the DS was getting in 2012.

They also never referred to those games as "core" and weren't developed by Game Freak. Chill.

Yes, it's amazing support for such an old system with its successor on the market.3DS is also a handheld, and those generally have tons of remakes and low budget stuff. I guess you must have hated the GBA.

Btw, care to enlighten me how DS' 2012 support was better than this? Care to list more relevant exclusives and third party games?

I presume new handheld in 2019
