Forums - Gaming Discussion - I don't like the direction Sony is taking

Do you only play narrative games?

Yes 162 39.61%

No 247 60.39%

Total:409

I actually spent most of my time in online games, Hearthstone, Starcraft 2, Total War etc
Even in Single player games I generally play more games with less of a story and more a gameplay focus like again Total War or Civilization or Mount and Blade, Forza Horizon I can play them for 1000s of hours.

I do like narative games I loved The Last of Us and some of the Telltale games but its more an exception then the norm. I did like Bloodborne and Nioh a lot altough they are not from the first party studio's I have always found microsoft to be heading in a better direction I play horde mode in Gears 4 all the time and still play Forza Horizon 3 but people seem to like what Sony is doing more so my exception deffenitely isn't the rule.

Anyway, I think they are making more narrative games then I personally want to play but there is enough other games to hold my attention so it doesn't matter.

If it means more Bloodborne, Uncharted, and Horizon I have zero issues with it. Besides, Sony systems have tons of third party support so genres get covered.

No i dont only play narrative driven games, that being said i think there is a point to be made that games can be narrative driven and still be COMPLETELY different, so the whole

"homogenise all of Sony's franchises into The Last of Us like games"

Is something i cant agree with, though i can see your concern because of the similarties between the new GOW and TLOU, however do keep in mind that games can have a narrative / be narrative driven while also being completely different from one another, to make an example TLOU, InFamous, and Horizon are all Narrative driven games and yet they couldnt be more different (each one even belongs to a different genre).

Plus Sony doesnt just make narrative driven games, Gran Turismo, The Last Guardian, and Bloodborne (yeah i get it that last one ain exactly first party but its one of their exclusive offerings and they own it) are not exactly narrative driven.

I agree. The last guardian, dreams, God of war, driveclub, ratchet & clank, horizon zero dawn, GT sport, they are all too much like the last of us.

Don't forget Spiderman. Peter just keeps murdering people in the trailers I see, it's dark, gruesome stuff.

I never was really interested in God of War, well since the reveal last year 100% Day 1 buy, cant wait.
And God of War was always the same, it needed a big change.

You're justa  prt of that niche I was talking about here, then. Anyone outside of that might have the opposite view.

Same here. It's like all of Sony's studios thought 'if Naughty Dog can do it, so can we', but nah, it doesn't work like that. What you end up getting is Sub-Ubisoft action adventures with nothing new brought to the table. Anyone expecting Days Gone to be anything more than what EA or Ubisoft ship out on an annual basis is to be dissappointed, trust me.

Santa Monica will undoubtedly fail at trying to be as clever as Naughty Dog when it comes to subtext in the characters and stuff like that, in that bracket only Rockstar fly with ND. SM don't have a history with well told stories and good character writing, why should I be excited about this games story? They've fucked with the gameplay and give us Ryse 2, it's insane.

On the other hand Sony's consoles get a whole lot more than their studios stuff, and thank God for that, because the truth of the matter is Sony's studios just aren't that good.

Santa Monica are better at it than Naughty Dog, less one liners and a more nuanced story is what they are all about, like a novel versus a movie.

Ryse like gameplay? Did you even see the gameplay this E3? God of War's combat looks amazing.

I'm more worried about other games, like you said, Days Gone and the likes, coming from developers who have only ever done just one of the things right, can they actually manage to do both fairly well, as well as Naughty Dog, I don't think so.

God of War was always about both gameplay and narrative too. God of War isn't the issue I'm specifically talking about, Santa Monica knows how to nail both story and gameplay.

Its the other developers that I have my doubts about. Also like I said I like a variety of games.

This statements irks me, not PS4's upcoming lineup of exclusives, which I think looks great. However if Jim's views on this are being echoed throughout Sony at this time it could lead to homogenisation in the future. That is the problem here.

I like the changes to this GOW because I stopped playing the series by the third game they released. It just got boring quickly. Everything from the main character to the storyline/narrative got repetitive. Even DMC needs a change like this.

And what devs / studios from Sony do you doubt from?

I only had concerns for Guerrilla games but they proved me wrong since Horizon ended up being great (hope they keep that up), and the only other studio i have doubts with are Japan Studio because they seem to be hit and miss sometimes, for example Gravity Rush is great but the first Knack wasnt so hot... that being said the sequel looks better.

Yea, after like 6 games, even I had to force myself to finish them, I have yet to finish Ascension, and I loved all the previous ones. So yea, I'm a huuuge fan of the first games, and I can't wait to see Kratos in this new adventure, even with the changes, it sounds even more epic. I fkn love you SSM.

You think God of War's story telling has been better than Naughty Dogs work with stuff like TLOU? Forget plot but the moment to moment character writing? To each their own.

The combat looked well animated, as far as depth we'll just have to see.

I'd rather they went larger than life and less opf this emotional stuff with this new game, but that's just me.

As far as the other studios, I have faith in TLOU 2 and that's it. If Studio Liverpool reformed and did a super duper Wipeout game, or if a fully funded Twisted Metal game with a modern damage model was coming, that would excite me more than another cinematic TPS game.
