Looks the part compared to the older DW titles.

I can already imagine a mate of mine trying to buy me a copy over on Steam in order to get me to play it with him.

Won't happen. The game won't have any kind of multiplayer due to it being the team's first open-world game.

Well that's me saved then . He'd always try to rope me into playing Samurai Warriors and DW with him from time to time, even going so far as to buying me the full editions of those games, but I didn't want him wasting his money on me like that.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

The heck!

Wu is the best for sure. You already know I been skipping due to the lack of Wu love. The addition of Cheng Pu of course changing that mindset.

Just to throw more shade :P, the best DW of course had the most Wu characters compared to the other kingdoms like DW3 :).

Shu>Wei>Jin>Wu

Don't get me wrong, I do like some Wu characters (especially Gan Ning), but to me they just seem to be really lacking in likeable characters compared to the other kingdoms. Oh, and they also have the two Qiaos (the two most boring and generic characters), which doesn't exactly help

Edit: And what's with all the Wu fans on VGC? Where my Shu boyz be at?

2nd Edit: Oh and Wu also have one of the worst stages in the games. That Sun Ce being cursed by a mystic stage sucks hard every time it's been in a DW game! Really hope they just do it with a cutscene or something in #9

All kingdoms got boring characters, but Wu makes them fun. Especially with ROTK, Dynasty Tactics 2 included.

Fun fact: Wu lasted as long as Western Jin with 51 years. Wei and Shu only lasted 45 and 42 years respectively. Sun Quan of course had the longest reign and with the longest period of peace.

2nd Fun fact: During the Three kingdoms era, only Wu took a large amount of territory  from the others. Of course that excludes the fall of each kingdom, which is well past anyone famous. I guess I should say between Cao/ Pi, Bei/ Chan and Quan.

I still wonder how the open world aspect is going to work out. The trailer doesn't really show of much of that.

Shu was my fave and Cloud...I mean, Guan Ping, was my fave character,

Far out DW really turned to shit after 5. DW8 was a bit of a step in the right direction but I still barely played it.

Yuan Shu is long overdue, that's for sure. They even increased his role in DW8, so now the need is greater than ever. Not sure about Gonsun Zan though. He sure has potential, but adding him would require considerable efforts due to his story being almost completely ignored so far, so I don't think it's going to happen. I'd like it to, though.

Personally I kind of think it might be better if the strict division into kingdoms was abolished from the games. There's a lot of characters that have history even before joining their 'kingdom', and the games mostly focus on the time before the kingdoms were actually a thing. It's strange seeing all the characters talk about kingdoms possibly as early as before the year 200, whereas Wei was officially founded as late as 213. I think getting rid of the strict division into kingdoms could benefit the series by emphasizing the somewhat chaotic nature of the era, and by making it clearer that the kingdoms came from factions forming around certain individuals (i.e. Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan) that were originally just warlords, just like a lot of other people.

I've also been thinking it could improve the narrative and quality of the story mode if there was just one grand story mode instead of one for every kingdom or character. I don't think it's going to happen though, since KT seems to be more interested in individual generals than the big picture. Having just a unified story mode would almost certainly make the characters feel more distant because it's hard to be on one side in one battle and on another side in the next one.

hmm, I gotta say I'm glad it's split up in to separate kingdoms. Sure there are some characters that did stuff before really joining a kingdom, and some who switched between them, and some who while influential figures in a the existence of a kingdom died before it even existed (Sun Jian and Sun Ce for example). But playing multiple sides and seeing the story from multiple perspectives is one of my favourite parts of Dynasty Warriors. How would that work for 1 single campaign? How would you play both sides of the battle?

Most games are just you play one side (good guys) and fight against the other side (bad guys). DW doesn't really have a solid good/bad guys since it can be completely different depending on which kingdom you're playing as and I love that about the games!

That's actually one of my gripes with Samurai Warriors too, that characters are grouped together so much. I mean it's not really possible there due to how much things shifted over the sengoku period and there wasn't really any kingdoms or anything similar that stayed around for any length of time, but still.

I thought my opinion might prove controversial. Anyway, free mode would obviously solve the problem of playing on both sides, and possible even the story part, but obviously free mode and story don't go well together, so seeing the story from another perspective would suffer in my idea. That said, in my idea, the game wouldn't really take any sides in the story mode, storytelling-wise. It'd tell the story from an 'outside' perspective, then let you play the battle as the side that makes more sense somehow (typically the winner, I guess - winning as the losing side and then actually losing despite really winning always felt strange).

It looks terrible and outdated!

Not really, i love it and can't wait, but if i say that this post will have more impact in people's minds rather than me just gushing. It's a bit of a test i'm making.

Go Shu! Eternally fated to fail but putting up an impossible fight!

I think that partially depends on the stage. For example, Chi Bi and Fan Castle are definitely stages that you can win at but still see your side "lose". IIRC in the latest entries both of those scenarios end up with the objective changing to escape rather than defeating the enemy commander, so it still works.

Plus I love the hypothetical scenarios that DW8 added. Really enjoyed being able to alter how certain battles went and see how things could potentially have played out differently. I'd really like it if they continued down that route, maybe even added more than 1 hypothetical route even.  Surely there's not many more, if any, noteworthy historical battles left to add. But they can still do a lot with hypothetical scenarios!

That's why I said 'typically'. There are situations where playing on the losing side makes sense - not necessarily more than playing on the winning side, but still makes sense. Those two are good examples of battles where playing on the losing side makes sense.

I liked the idea of hypothetical scenarios but to be honest, they felt a bit half-assed. To really shine, they would have required even more attention than they got. Instead, once the story mode got to the hypothetical branch, it was a quick rush to the finish, with the possibility of some stalling stages where nothing interesting happened.
