Forums - Gaming Discussion - In your list of gaming priorities, how high are graphics on the list?

Seems like a loaded question. Graphics are definitely not the most important to me, but they aren't 13 on my list. Probably 4th. Gameplay, story (to a consideration since realistically story is crap in games compared to other mediums but I am a sucker for FF and MGS), and immersion probably rank higher. And all 3 of those are made better with better graphic fidelity.

One thing I do not understand is when someone says that they value game-play highly but don't care about graphics at all. That doesn't make much sense to me. Game-play advancement is tied closely to graphical advancement.

You're clearly somebody that doesn't like spreadsheet sim games. But trust me, they can have big gameplay improvements without graphical advancement

Pure rubbish.

Modern graphics have improved the genre greatly.

Graphics is probably a higher subconscious priority than I would like it to be. I have a hard time enjoying games that have "last gen" graphics, or older gen graphics.

I don't give any thought to resolution really, as long as it's HD. SD really looks pretty trash and so affects enjoyment. I don't think anything above 720p really improves my enjoyment. It's only "value" is as a console wars pissing contest, and I'm over that now, I hope.

For single player games (which are my preferred games by far) fps is irrelevant so long as it's stable and at or above 30fps.

Texture, detail, AA, lighting, animations, physics they all affect my enjoyment. Story, character, gameplay / mechanics / controller configuration, sound. All very important. I don;t think I can really put them in a priority list though.

Art style per se isn't all that important as long as it's thematically congruent with the game. I don't like one art style over any other, I just want excellence in whatever style is used.

After seeing how unimpressed people were with the X1X’s focus on resolution bump, it got me curious about how each of us prioritize what is most important when choosing games to buy.

For myself, the graphical aspects of a game are rather low on the list.

This is what my list looks like:

#01 - Enjoyable Gameplay Mechanics (definitely the most important!!! )
#02 - Comfortable Controls
#03 - No Severe Slowdowns (i.e. dropping below 15 frames per second)
#04 - Very Short Load Screens/No installs (preferably less than 3 seconds)
#05 - Enjoyable Difficulty Level
#06 - Great Replayability/Post Game Content/Unlockables/Secrets/etc.
#07 - Interesting Game World/Level Design
#08 - Excellent User Interface
#09 - Great Art Direction
#10 - Great Music and Sound Effects
#11 - Optional split-screen gameplay (really awesome to have when hanging out with friends/roommates :D )
#12 - Enjoyable Story
#13 - Higher Graphical Fidelity
#14 - Higher Resolution

So, what does your list of gaming priorities look like?

Well, if you are a Nintendo Fan, its normal to put graphics on the last position. Makes sense. I have just played the vanishing of Ethan Carter on my PC for the first time, and daaaamn... Game wasnt so good, but i kept playing for the visuals... Im a grapchic whore, hence, my no interest on getting a Switch...

No fixed list, the game has to be well made and run according to its gameplay.

Gameplay and story are more important to me. Though, multilayer is a huge part of gaming these days. There's no story to be had.

Everything is equally important. Nothing should be compromised. Only people who play on weaker hardware or who favorite games are not visually appealing say graphics don't matter. I guess it doesn't when you low quality games lol. Funny how this is only talked about onlin. Glad my favorite games don't compromise anything. I get the best of all categories.

Bingo but graphics and game play ahould be equal like it is in Horizon.

Question to the people that have story high on your lists:

You don't read books right?

1. Gameplay
2. Controls and Camera
3. Framerate (consistent 30 is fine with me)
4. Music
5. Presentation/Art style
6. Graphics
7. Story

As long as the story is half decent, I'm fine with it, but it depends on the genre (JRPGs, I'm fine with an okay story, but VNs I would expect a good story)
