This is the main reason I'm slowly drifting away from PlayStation. Sony's focus on character, emotion, and storytelling is at an all-time high and my investment at an all-time low.

I'm glad there are folks out there whose needs are being met by Sony's current design philosophy. Diversity in the industry is a great thing, and not every platform needs to offer the same kinds of gaming experiences.

But, selfishly, I wish PlayStation would retreat from its cinematic ambitions.

It's interesting reading comments like this because i'm effectively the opposite. My interest in consoles waned considerably during the 7th gen, eventually leading me to PC gaming. I've always felt that gaming as a medium for story telling is heavily underutilised, and Sony's push towards that kind of game has slowly pulled my interest back. I don't think they always succeed (e.g. i enjoyed Horizon's gameplay immensely, but the story felt poorly presented), but i appreciate their efforts. For the first time since 2009, my gaming time (as limited as it was) was slightly in favour of consoles in the latter half of 2016. It'll almost certainly swing back to PC this year because of Stormblood, but it was still surprising.

That all said, i can understand why some would dislike it. I do think Sony's 1st parties offer a large enough variety of games to keep most people happy, but those uninterested in story driven games will likley be better served with Nintendo (at least as far as exclusives are concerned).

Something similar happened to me.  I owned an NES and SNES but had very little investment in gaming.  Outside FF6 and a handful of other titles, it was just a way to kill time for me.  The majority of content on those systems simply did not engage my imagination.  They might have been fun in the moment but they were ultimately shallow experiences that I did not think about after I finished playing.  That's why gaming in general did not come close to challenging reading fantasy and scif-fi novels as my primary hobby.  I'd play in bite-sized chunks, get bored, and go do something else.

Then came the PS1, FF7, FFT, and other games that appealed to my imagination.  That's when the medium really started to interest me.  Most of the games that made me fall in love with gaming centered around complex emotions and imaginative storytelling.

I'm with Layden on this.  If gaming went back to being mostly shallow characters held together loosely by a shallow plot then I'd probably drift away again.  People who insist that gaming should be only one thing are just being selfish.

Same here. Overwatch has kept my interest for a long time though so I do get into that every now and then.

I never played Overwatch myself. I guess I have played quite a bit of MP on Mario Kart 8, though that's probably because the online is free right now.

Yea my cousin begged me to buy it and said he would pay for it if I didn't like it. I was done with FPS games and had no interset in playing it.  Ended up playing longer than he did. It's not really an FPS and the game mode's are really fun. I've been impressed by it.

And this is one of the reason I enjoy PlayStation more than xbox. Sony is better at creating those games than MS.

Same. Also I think it will be the main reason PS will dominate Xbox every generation.

Nailed it. Probably why I have drifted away from PlayStation consoles being my main console the last couple generations. I have grown tired of the cinematic narrative games. I'd love to see what a studio as talented as Naughty Dog could do making a dedicated MP title or a straight action game. I see stuff like Detroit and now Days Gone based on the E3 video and I just could not be less interested.

and i hope they continue the great work

I totally agree with him. I love SP with good stories. So Sony makes me a very happy gamer.

It doesn't mean that you can't get into story driven games which excels in the gameplay departement too. Ex : Xenoblade, Bravely series, Shin Megami Tensei mainline games, etc ... But they're mostly JRPG, lol.

Of course, but structural changes are necessary to implement a story. Plenty of Sony's own story driven games have fantastic gameplay, but those games also spend a good chunk of their time presenting you the narrative. Some people would rather those portions weren't there, and that the resources for games like Detroit (where plot is the gameplay) were spent elsewhere. A common reason for disliking JRPGs is how much story they throw at you. Remove the plot and many would be half as long :p

To clarify, i'm not saying those uninterested in story driven games can't enjoy them. There are likewise plenty of people like me that value both parts. I'm just saying that those that aren't interested as much in storytelling will likley be better served by Nintendo than Sony right now.

Funnily enough i'm getting to see both sides at once right now in the same game. FF14 just released its new expansion Stormblood, and it's about evenly split between people that enjoy working through the plot, and those that skip every cutescene and dialogue box than can. If the latter group could remove the plot entirely, they probably would

I understand that you prefer those kind of games while I prefer Sony approach but the reality is that ps4 and xb1 are already very similar by sharing 90% of the library, why ask the same kind of games on both platform? Let them have some differentiation between them.
