This is the main reason I'm slowly drifting away from PlayStation. Sony's focus on character, emotion, and storytelling is at an all-time high and my investment at an all-time low.

I'm glad there are folks out there whose needs are being met by Sony's current design philosophy. Diversity in the industry is a great thing, and not every platform needs to offer the same kinds of gaming experiences.

But, selfishly, I wish PlayStation would retreat from its cinematic ambitions.

It's interesting reading comments like this because i'm effectively the opposite. My interest in consoles waned considerably during the 7th gen, eventually leading me to PC gaming. I've always felt that gaming as a medium for story telling is heavily underutilised, and Sony's push towards that kind of game has slowly pulled my interest back. I don't think they always succeed (e.g. i enjoyed Horizon's gameplay immensely, but the story felt poorly presented), but i appreciate their efforts. For the first time since 2009, my gaming time (as limited as it was) was slightly in favour of consoles in the latter half of 2016. It'll almost certainly swing back to PC this year because of Stormblood, but it was still surprising.

That all said, i can understand why some would dislike it. I do think Sony's 1st parties offer a large enough variety of games to keep most people happy, but those uninterested in story driven games will likley be better served with Nintendo (at least as far as exclusives are concerned).

I'm big into the single player experience. My last few games played are (in order): The Witcher III, Uncharted 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Order: 1886, and I'm currently playing NieR: Automata. The only online MP I've ever really enjoyed are TLOU and Uncharted 2-4. I mean I play Overwatch and Rainbow Siege with my son but that's because he likes those games.

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Your list of games shown in your signature sorta shows the opposite of what you are trying convey.

I applaud PlayStations wide array of games. Having a great Single Player selection is fantastic and can be played by everyone regardless of being connected by internet or not.

If you can't play alone, the only thing you're good at is being lonely.

Well said. Yeah, obviously I lean more toward Nintendo's offerings, but I agree Sony offers enough variety to entertain me. I thoroughly enjoyed games like Wipeout 2048 and The Last Guardian. Unfortunately, both are from dissolved studios :(

And I continue to use and enjoy my PS4. I just beat Metro 2033 Redux on PS4 last night, in fact. But moving forward, I foresee using it mostly for indies and third-party exclusives like Nier and Persona. Sony's internal studios seem to have made the Naughty Dog formula the gold standard, which, unfortunately for me, means more scripted sequences and more cinematic storytelling. Again, this is great for folks who enjoy that formula, just not so hot for me.

Sony resently made a statement like "the reason their going more story driven for God of War, is because europeans really love story driven games (& singstar)".

I think its true.

Speaking with the page "the Telegraph", Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Shawn Layden commented:

"My philosophy is to play to my strengths. And if you look at the studios we have – Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Santa Monica Studios, Japan Studios – that’s what we do well. We do story. We create characters. I was so gratified to see the response to Horizon’s Aloy when she showed up on the screen and the crowd went wild. Those are the kind of things we do well. It’s what we’re known for. It really speaks to our entertainment DNA. We wish to entertain. We wish to make you happy. We wish to make you cry. That whole range of emotions we can pluck at to make you have a great experience. Games as a service? We have a bit of that with our MLB The Show – it’s got the same virtual currency a lot of sports have – and we have other titles that come up that play in that space. But if you want to make a big generalisation about what does Worldwide Studios do? We’re big on character. We’re big on story."

Epic qoute is epic.

I'm not sure what's in there -- I've since blocked signatures in the forum -- but I'm always willing to give games a try. I recently used the EA Access free trial period to try Unravel, which, unfortunately, falls into the trap I described above.

He makes good points but it is down to the strengths of the studios that he points out. Those studios he mentioned are story tellers mainly. The few online games Sony has are just side parts of the main story driven games (so Uncharted 4) or simulators, so MLB and Gran Turismo. Sony don't have a CoD, Battlefront or Halo to help boost online play numbers and while Killzone existed it was never known for it's MP.

In a way, other than the ridiculously scripted gameplay video we saw, it's the reason why I'm very disappointed in Bioware's new game showing in Anthem. 4 player co-op MP? Get that crap out of your games Bioware, you have strengths elsewhere.

Hmm, pie.

Tear away 😍
