Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why are Xbox and Playstation lumped together in sales metrics, but not Nintendo?

I think this is so weird. We keep getting quotes in statements like "Xbox One and PS4 showed 30 percent growth YoY" and "Xbox and Playstation are now at 90 million consoles sold" etc. Is the Wii U and/or the Switch not consoles? Why are they separated from the pack? Either lump everyone together, or not at all! Just singling out those two is like giving two-thirds of the class a gold star when everyone participated. *shrug*

This kind of data obscures the performance of individual platforms anyway. But, what's the purpose of only mashing Xbox and Playstation when Nintendo is still a big presence in the industry?

The Switch is a different type of console and the Wii U is irrelevant.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

probably because they are very close in technical performance and thus effectually represent a shared plattform to 3rd parties as is evident by these consoles sharing about 90+% of their 3rd party library (which certainly represents 80+% of their whole library)

WiiU/Switch like the Wii before them doesn't share much of their libraries with the MS/Sony consoles (yet?)

Yeah, how will I know if the Switch sold more this year than last year?

Nintendo circumvents the competition and thus looks to find an audience that is either loyal to them and non-traditional to gaming. This gen they are looking to graduate ds owners to consoles with the switch. Sony knocked them down a notch and Microsoft gobbled up any chance that hey had at third party because they refused to make powerful consoles that can draw third party. Nintnedo created an unfair culture where third parties cannot always survive. Ubisoft has figured out somewhat how to survive.

Rumors say it did. We're back to the Wii days, baby!

They weren't really doing this when the Wii U was still supported, like mentioned.

Wii U was bombing pretty hard

Wii U was included but its contribution was a victim to statistical rounding.

Well, the switch is considered next gen hardware. It would be more appropriate to compare the wii u to the PS4 or xbox one or lump them into together.
