One of the reasons why Nintendo should've made a console and not an iPhone.

If Nintendo believed in their own system at release, and ordered a buttload of all the components they wouldnt be in this spot.

Its because they played it too safe, assumeing getting shipments of these components wouldnt be a issue.

Now its looking like they will be limited in product for a year.

The other alternative was to plan this stuff out in advance, and make use of components others dont (in the design phase).

I doubt they would've gotten more if they ordered earlier. Chips are a giant business and contracts are huge and have to be made far in advance. Nintendo is probably not a high priority customer as Apple. Fabs are already at their limits and they can't just shift resources as they please.

He has access to the exact same info as we do:

He has some sources in NPD, but aside from that, everyone can check what he's talking about.

Doesn't fiscal year end on March or April, though? That would mean that in only 1-2 months the Switch has a whopping 23% of Nintendo's whole year. It was obvious the 3DS's % would be ridiculously high given Nintendo killed the Wii U last year and still didn't have the Switch out, it would be more meaningful to have actual figures.

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2017/170427e.pdf

total: 463 000 billion yen

3DS: 248 000 billion yen

Switch: 111 000 billion yen

Wii U: 64 000 billion yen

Other: 40 000 billion yen

Rounded to nearest 1000 billion yen.

Thats my point, they should have had contracts with much bigger number of units.

Gambled on their device doing well, it would have paid off big for them now.

Instead they kinda stuck their toes in the water to test sales.

Now they have to rework contracts... only to find out apple and the likes are takeing most of the production of said units they need.

Its effecting how many Switch Nintendo can make and sell.

Didn't PS4 only ship 2 mil in its first month, too? And Sony were surprised by it's early success. And I think Nintendo realized how weak their product library was. Honestly saying Nintendo just needed to "believe" more is easy to do in hindsight, but a little over 2 mil in the first month seems like a good safe number. I think the fact that Nintendo is having trouble catching up is the real frustration.

Honestly, I almost don't even care that Nintendo is still holding onto the 3ds. The backlog of great games is so big that I don't feel like moving on too quickly.

Most importantly, with the release schedule of Nintendo's exclusives, it's hard to justify quittng the 3ds. At least for this year. There's pretty much one big Switch game every month. With Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Arms, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario & Rabbids : Kingdom Battle, Xenoblade 2 and Super Mario Odyssey , Nintendo could probably release an extra 1.5-2 mil Switche an they'd still be sold out. I just hope this doesn't last past 2017 like Reggie said.

Pretty sure ps4 sold 1m in one day in the US alone.

You didn't get my point. Maybe they couldn't get more parts allocated because there simply wasn't more. They are constantly at their limits, they can't just produce more than possible just because Nintendo wants them to.

Hasn't even been 6 months and the Switch is quickly eating up the chart. Wow.

You mean, 3 months? Cause it released in March.

That actually proves my point.

I was expecting it to hit 25% within half a year. It needing only 3 months is very positive news
