A lot of people and most of them are fine. Probably because most of them don't try to deliberately piss off the authorities.

He apparently stole a propaganda poster and tried to smuggle it out with him. I don't see how this was bad, but it was enough.

Just simply traveling to North Korea is stupid. Might as well go camping in Afghanistan.
I'm deeply saddened by his death and wish his family the best but I'm sorry, if you go into North Korea and willingly defy their rules, you're at the mercy of their laws not ours. That was an insanely foolhardy thing for him to do. The walls have eyes there, it's best to just follow their rules. Yes, they're crazy people over there but still you broke their laws. They obviously don't want us over there, let them fester in their own cowardice and incompetence.

I may be totally fine if I run up and kick a hyena in the ass, but why take the chance? There's nothing exotic about visitng a country where the government can jail or kill you on a humbug.
I honestly thought this was a joke thread or a thread about a comedian based on the guys name.
'Warmbier' is german for 'warm beer', and 'otto' is a very german, if old fashioned name. It's hard to eplain why, but it just sounds utterly ridiculous.
Suffice to say, after reading OP I realized my mistake. Whatever he did, it was minor enough that he didn't deserve 15 years of jail for it and certainly not being beaten/tortured into a coma over it. North Korea is a fucked up place.

I don't get why a lot of women vacation in Dubai or Qatar, where they will be put in jail for being raped, either. It's fucked up and it's like 'get rape for free' card for men, because most women aren't going to report it and get more severe punishment if they do. Yet it's becoming the new popular party place.
I hope and pray that Otto rests in peace. I do not even want to imagine what kind of hell he must have had to endure over the past 17 months to be rendered into that state.

I worded it the wrong way. I mean in a country that is normal, it wouldn't be bad. In case this, of course it was bad, it cost him his life.

I don't buy that he stole anything. NK is the sort of country that would plant shit just because. Besides a shitty vid there's no evidence he did anything. That being said, the chances of this happening are higher than you think, so avoid NK at all costs. It's a literal insane country run by a legitimately mentally instable person
