Otto Warmbier, the American student who had been detained in North Korea, has died his family has said.

Mr Warmbier was transferred back to the United States after over a year in North Korean captivity. He had been sentenced to 15 years hard labour after he was caught trying to take a propaganda banner from North Korea for someone back home in exchange for a used car and to impress a semi-secret society he wanted to join. He was transferred back to the US in a coma, but had showed signs of severe neurological decline.

"It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home.  Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2:20 p.m", the Warmbier family said in a statement.

Even if I think that North Korea is a piece of shit country which has to be freed from its fucking regime, Otto Warmbier was an idiot to break the rules especially as being an U.S citizen.

I don't know what they actually did to him and no one deserves such treatment, but don't fuck around with the law of countries which simply don't value human lifes.

My condolence to the family.

I remember reading about this. We probably won't ever completely know what happened to him, but yeah, he probably got tortured.

It was bad form by N. Korea leaving him in such a state but this is a classic case of natural selection at work. I hope anybody else especially Americans who travel to N. Korea aren't so stupid. They only need 1 tiny reason to detain an American tourist so if you've any sense don't give them that reason.

Never heard about this. 22 is way too young.

Kim Jong Un now be like "Not our problem. He's still alive when we gave it to you"

Hey finally somebody tells me what the fuck happened, none of the news programmes here would say why he was there in the first place or why he was detained. Not saying he deserved what happened but he did willingly put his life at risk.

Why did he become a student in North Korea?

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I just wanna know one thing, WTH is an American doing in North Korea, of all the interesting places you can go to, you decide to go to NK?

Who the hell would go to North Korea... on purpose?!

one of my flatmates is fascinated by that, as it's guaranteed to turn heads - he has enough disposable income for several grand trips a year, so I think he might do it some day depending on how volatile the political climate is
