Never got the appeal of Meshuggah. Dead boring.

As for Suffocation, I've tried a few times to get into them but never been truly successful. Certainly listenable stuff but there's a load of death metal bands I'd rather listen to.

Have you listened to Contradictions Collapse? That's more thrashy.

I think I remember watching that before!

This is probably my favourite grindcore album, so why not delve into the soul-crushing title track!

Album of the Week: Ulver - Nattens Madrigal; Aatte Hymne til Ulven i Manden (1997)

Now, here's an album that may be hard for many to get into! It is one of the quintessential lo-fi black metal albums. This was the third and final album of Ulver's "Black Metal Trilogie" - Bergtatt was mainly a mix of black metal and folk, while Kveldssanger was purely folk. This album decided to go the pure black metal route!! For some reason the last time I listened to it, it clicked much more than the previous times I did!! Maybe because I was listening to it with headphones, as opposed to the speakers of prior times. If you can stomach the audio quality, you'll find a real gem here!!

I think this is the first Ulver album I've ever actually properly listened to. I think I was partly curious as to how lo-fi it would actually sound, and I was actually surprised by how palatable it was to my ears (in as much as the riffs are easily discernible and it's easy to hear the rhythmic drive of the songs). Perhaps it's just years of listening to metal that have got me used to questionable production quality, as it probably would be tough for many people to endure the length of the album. Black metal isn't normally my thing (I usually have to be in the mood for it, and the mood rarely strikes these days), but it was an enjoyable listen.

I guess an off shoot of the above is to ask what some of your favourite albums are, production wise? Any producers, production styles, techniques etc that you like or loathe?

I really like the Scott Burns/Morrisound style myself.
