So umm.... like... why are there so many different sub-genres? And how do you tell between them? And why is the best one (Nu Metal, not as if I even know what differentiates it from the others ) not there?

I didn't include nu metal, as many people don't consider it to be metal, so I just avoided that can of worms altogether.

I don't know, I'd just include it and screw the purists. I'd say the some of the albums from the likes of Deftones, Korn, Slipknot, Stone Sour, Godsmack, Disturbed, System of a Down and Linkin Park are just as deserving of being included here (arguably more so considering a lot of classic metal tracks would be considered heavy rock by today's standards).

Speaking of Nu-Metal, where would the likes of Trivium and Dragonforce fall?

They're "nu" but I wouldn't classify them as Nu-Metal at all.

Trivium - not overly familiar with their later work, but I'd say early work is metalcore

Dragonforce - power metal

Well, lets put some more nu-metal in the thread.

(I'm not sure if SoaD is nu-metal though?)

Links to some boss nu metal (so the page doesn't get bogged down under the weight of embedded vids):

Yeah guys, if you want you can post nu metal here, I'm not going to complain.

Album of the week: Dying Fetus - Destroy the Oppostion (2000)

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9iAaBz6Ofc

You know what, this album is a mixed reaction to me. It's strange, for Dying Fetus, maybe possibly more than any other band, there's parts of songs that I just love, while other sections in the exact same tune I'm not too big on. This album is the one by theirs that I'm most familiar with, and while overall I'll say that it's a pretty good album, as I said before there's parts I love, and parts I'm not as big on. For example, the opening track has an intro riff that I absolute adore, but then afterwards we get some riffing that just aren't up my alley. It has a lot of moments like that throughout the album. My favourite track is probably Epidemic of Hate, it's great and very catchy all the way through. Overall, if you're looking for a death metal album that is riffs galore, this should be right up your alley.

I will never understand why some of my fellow metalheads hate on nu-metal. I think it's as good as many of the other sub-genres of metal. I particularly like the nu metal albums by Korn, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Staind, Deftones, System of a Down, and Godsmack.

Linkin Park's my favourite, but I'll post some bands that you didn't list. Actually, 4 of my favourite albums of all time or nu metal, so it's not that I don't like nu metal personally. In any case, they're Hybrid Theory and Meteora by Linkin Park, Satellite by P.O.D. and Sinner by Drowning Pool.

They're similar to numetal in that they're sort of the mainstream, "safe" representations of their respective subgenres, but yeah they're not really numetal in style. Trivium is mainly metalcore with some thrash influences - which is kind of like the numetal of the 2000's anyway as it similarly uses catchy hooks and is often a more tame version of metal. Many argue that metalcore, like numetal, doesn't even belong in the genre. I tend think it's more on the metal side than nu metal as it incorporates some more complex musicianship and contains harsh vocals. But it's still kind of a mainstream and manufactured brand of metal.

Dragonforce is power metal, albeit a bland and watered down version of it in my view. They're just one of the few power metal bands that has, for whatever reason, managed to hit the bigtime here in the States.

I don't listen to whole of a metal but I do like Voyager.

Avenged Sevenfold is awesome too.
