It sounds impractical. I believe if Nintendo is going to get into VR, it will not be an add-on. It will be the core experience.

I think one of the revisions of switch will have a 1080p screen, but the same max and min power, it will let player choose if runs at dock configuration in handheld(better visuals), or regular handheld configuration with 720p to 1080p upscale(best config for batery life).
They could also include VR.

well occulus is 470graams, the vive is 555 grams, PSVR at 610 grams. the switch without joycons is only 250.

How about the Samsung gear VR or any phone VR headset. The Switch VR will probably more similar to those compare to Oculus/Vive/PSVR so that would be a better comparison.

I think a new Switch with a 7nm Tegra and a 1080p screen would be fine for Nintendo VR titles. Nintendos art style lends well to VR as the resolution is not a huge factor. Many titles on PSVR that use Nintendo style art already look decent.

For the future of VR I think a drop in device is not going to be the best. I believe to reach a full 180 degree field of view it is going to require two screens, and possibly even some curvature to them. This is one of the biggest things I am looking forward two with next gen VR, higher resolutions and larger field of view.

Nintendo have already planned for vr with the Switch it seems. At the very least, they're toying with the idea. Here is an article from back in December 2016.

I believe for VR the same image has to be rendered twice, so you would need double the horsepower to get that same visual fidelity any at 1080p. So probably you would need some kind of setup with two Tegra processors or something much faster than the current Tegra X1.

I think the Universal Studios Mario Kart ride is also utilizing VR.

I'll guarantee you we won't see Metroid Prime VR at release. That's just crazy thinking- it's as unrealistic as ecpecting Goku to be in Smash
