I don't see why anyone should consider Horizon's graphics to be mindblowingly great. For example, you walk towards the branches of a tree and then right through them with no reaction whatsoever. The same holds true for all kinds of foliage, the sole exception being the tall grass that is used for the stealth aspects of the game. Another example is that wind makes Aloy's hair clip through her ears and cheeks. That it can rain inside a cave is also a bit strange.

Basically, Horizon has the same shortcomings in its graphics that other games have, in some aspects (like foliage reacting to the player) it lags behind games on older hardware.

Great graphics are something like a stone being tossed into the water and causing a realistic ripple effect. Similarly, if you fantasize about next gen graphics, you wouldn't only think of water reacting in an appropriate manner, but all kinds of things that can be touched. Improved textures and some flashy special effects are par for the course, they don't make games look like PS5 level.

You're talking about physics, not graphics.

Nothing even comes close, everything looks like they are old gen now, I was able to shake it off after UC4 but I done so much sight seeing and photography in Horizon that my eyes have been opened to the fact that no game even comes close, they all look like they old gen :( Why aren't teams as talented as Nuaghty dog or Gurilla...anyone agree or disagree? I need collective soothing because I feel like putting gaming away until ps5.

Not a chance.  You need to exercise your imagination more, as there are so many great games that don't have the graphics of either of those two but are great anyway.

GTA5 to Zelda.

I glanced through this thread and it made me cringe a bit.  I'm not saying I don't appreciate what devs do, because as an engineer I most certainly do.  It's just that at the end of the day games are only as good as they make you FEEL (not to semi-quote a Mazda commercial).  The whole package if you will.  Graphics is just once piece of that.  Case in point, I really liked uncharted (all of them) but HZD was just not my cup of tea.  I don't care how good it looks.  On the flips side, I am anticipating the new mario and that graphically can't even stand in the same room as HZD... who cares.

All things equal, I'd prefer a version of the same game with better graphics (textures, resolutions, etc.)... but other than that, I judge the game as a whole.

As for sight seeing... I can just do that outside on the beach, boat, etc.

Can you explore a post apocalytic world inhabited by robot dinosaurs on a boat?I think not. Graphics are a vital part of games, esspecially games that tell charecter driven stories. If you prefer ondering that's all good for you.

I think robot dinosaurs was one of the reasons I couldn't get into the game actually. That and the lack of full freedom to explore vertically.  You can put lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig.

And I can fish, ski, tube, drink and socialize with friends on my boat among other things like airshows etc. Can you do that in a video game? And the water is super realistic, but it doesn't mean I couldn't go enjoy a game with water in it despite looking like a video game.

I'm not saying graphics are bad. Good graphics are A great thing in a good game. But to say they ruin you for other games is a bit ridiculous. It means that's all you value. Which makes your gaming tastes one dimensional. Which I don't belive they are or at least I hope not.  So perhaps you were just exaggerating? Or maybe trying to garner  praise from others on two games you like? I dunno.

I digress. To each their own. And really I was just answering your original post.

I played lost legacy and jumped into ff15, man the environments were lacking as much detail.

I marveled at HZD in 4K HDR for a bit, then went back to playing Donkey Kong Country on the snes mini. I did check out all my 4K screenshots of HZD in actual 4K this time, so pretty. Then back to psvr the solus project. VR has spoiled my desire for the highest quality uncompressed pixels.

However I have also been playing Knack 2 with my kids, looks kinda great actually. Must be the tv, Knack can't be good...

Head.

No 60 fps though.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you...

BUT I have been playing games since 1989. I would NEVER say that games suck just because they don't have good graphics. That's just silly.

Anybody who argues graphics make a game are missing the point. There will ALWAYS be better graphics.

How long have you been gaming?

I can't really recall a time where graphics have spoiled other games for me. Games like Horizon and Uncharted are a great combonation of industry leading graphics tech, fine tuned fun gameplay, and great story telling. They are definitly a sight to see as they set the bar, but if they didn't have great gameplay, and fun leveldesign/gameplay they would not stand the test of time.

I play around with the Arcade Archives titles I bought through PlayStation Mobile, PS1 Classics, and PS2 on PS4 quite often, because they are still fun even if some are extreamly dated. Great games, will be great games regaurdless of their graphics.

Now, I can tell you two things that have pulled me away from other games. One was The Last of Us. TLOU in my opinion is the bench mark. As I am a huge fan of single player gaming, escaping to places, and connecting with amazing works of art, I was totally blown away by TLOU to the point where it was all I wanted to play for almost 2 years. I had to force myself not to play it to expereince other games.

The other is VR. There are certain geners I have almost completely lost any interest in ever playing outside of VR. Racers are almost pointless at this point outside of VR if it is an option. I don't mind racing on the Vita when I am not at home, but if I can race in VR, I will choose it every time. First Person Shooters, again fall under that same scenario. If I am on the go, I will get down on some Killzone Mercenary, but if I am at home Farpoint and Arizona Sunshine have killed my interest in stuff like Destiny, COD, and Battlefield/front. Honestly, as time progresses, I think VR is going to end up being 80% of my gaming at home. It is just a massively better expereince that will take both multiplayer and single player games to new and more exciting places. The freedom two move your head, your hands, even your entire body, changes everything.
